I just hope these councils are reserving some of these flats and houses for the servicemen who will get their demob papers when returning either from Afghanistan or the tens of thousands from Germany.

Actually - I wasn't commenting on the spelling in the question. I started writing my answer, then went to the BBC report and then came back to this page. I didn't even notice that the word was used in the question.

Back to the question...the problem, as has been stated earlier, is that white working class people *feel* that they are last in line, say - in the housing queue, when in fact, that's not really true:

I assume that the constant stream of "They're taking our jobs / wimmin / houses" stories from certain areas of the popular press is what gives these stories credence.

So perhaps the question should be "Does any other nation allow lies about immigrants to be circulated unchecked" and the answer is probably "yes - everyone's at it".

have to agree with sp in this, I think this perception of whites being treated unfairly is becoming a massive problem. We saw with the tram woman. It seems to be the source of a new wave of rabid xenophobia and I will point the finger at papers like the Daily Mail. Their agenda is destructive to the social health of this country.
Of course there are some immigrants that create problems, that milk the system and take advantage of benefits... just as their are plenty of 'our own people' that do the same, just as their are plenty of immigrants that work bloody hard, that are beneficial to our country.
We need to hear more about these because it's very wrong that white people feel that they are less important that immigrants.
