Can one be charged with racial offences when it is white British against white Scottish, or white British against white French or white British against white German even, or any such similar combinations?
The reason I ask is because it has often been said on this site that one can't, as these are nationalities and not races.
slightly bizarre, I would have thought ordinary harassment charges would do. No, I don't see why being German is a race. I wonder what the court will decide.
Defined by the CPS for the purpose of prosecuting under English law:
Racial group – this means any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin
That would be nice Sandy, but there are some who wont let us forget the slave trade nearly 200 years ago, never mind about what happened only 60 odd years ago.
thanks, hc. Sounds like a catch-all (and rather inaccurate) legal phrase, then. Outside of the courts, though, I'm not sure hating (say) Australians is really the mark of a racist.
well, that's what I mean, sandy, it is most certainly socially acceptable to hate Aussies and it would be very wrong of the human rights people to try to intervene when they are being stoned in the streets.
I dislike a number of people, but they probably remain blissfully unaware of my feelings, which is the way i would wish it to be.
If dislike takes the form of proactive intimidation - as alleged here - then that moves the issue onto an entirely different level, and an unacceptbale level in a civilised society.
You are right AOG - it is quiet, but there is plenty of time to go ...
