Mary-Ann Leneghan, 16, was stabbed to death in Prospect Park, Reading, Berks, in the early hours of Saturday.

Her 18-year-old friend is seriously ill after being subjected to a violent sexual ordeal by up to six men.

This has left me stunned and Angry and feeling very sad for their poor familys,I dont know if these are the right words to express my feelings.But i just feel hadred for the scum who did this.But right now I would quite happliy pull the lever that would hang those who are guilty.your thoughts please!!

Well yes, but the death penalty can't really be said to be a deterrent otherwise is would result in decreased crime rates where it was/is introduced.

When ruth ellis was hanged and hanratty there wasn't any Dna tests and the evidence looking back was a bit dodgy I admit.But if the evidence in this case when it comes to court and its a 100% then Why not hang those responsible.Im sure this would be a deterrent to other would be murderers.

Has been interesting to read everyones views on this subject, and I think we can safely say that everyone (almost, not too sure what planet mystess is on, after both her crass and unsympathetic postings) agrees that it was a truly appalling crime, and as hanging is not an option, the best we can hope for is that the people responsible will be caught and punished.  Somehow though I don't think that this will be the last time on AB we will be asking * is hanging to good for these ba****ds

Please remember I am VERY new to this site,and have yet to master it's "netiqutte".My two answers were NOT crass,my 1st merely asked (as a genuine question) why the girls were in the park.My 2nd answer just stated my feelings,that some of the answers in this thread frightened me( I have led a rather sheltered life) I feel sorry and upset if you think I live on another planet,but we are not all so "streetwise" as you obviously are!

PS I am certainly NOT unsympathetic,but trying to maintain a balanced outlook.

Em, sorry but fail to see how anyone who sympathises and is disgusted by the brutality of this awful crime can be deemed *streetwise*!!  And whilst I don't want to get involved in a slanging match, I found the question*Just what were girls this age DOING in a park at this time of night* pretty insulting, and I'm pretty sure that they were NOT there in the hope of being bundled into a car beaten, raped, tortured and then murdered and no doubt the final indignity will be having their names and reputations dragged through the mud!

I certainly agree with your querying of the question "What were the girls doing etc" Most girls of that age at one time or another hang out in strange places at odd hours. They certainly DO NOT deserve to be tortured, raped and murdered.  My own teenager used to slip out of a locked house to go partying - its horrifying - had to padlock the doors once I found out.  It's what young people do. They cannot see the dangers.

mystress. I don't think anyone was trying to attack you for your views. I agree that some of the posts on this thread have been deeply unpleasant including some - now deleted which were directed personally at me.

What people got upset about is that when you asked 'what were they doing there in the first place' it can be read as though you are implying that the girls' behaviour in some way contributed to what then happened to them. My view is that no matter how you behave you shouldn't be subjected to violence. Therefore the girls' behaviour is irrelevant.

I have found answer bank to be an interesting site with some really interesting posters. Please don't let this thread put you off. There are people who will disagree but usually in a fair debate. In this case I reported one post, and only one, for expressing racist views which offended me and break the answer bank guidelines. I then, to be fair, informed the poster that I had done this whist addressing his post. This opened me up to a lot of personal abuse which I can only assume others reported as it has generally disappeared today.

Answer bank has not in my experience usually been like this. I do hope we can all disagree in the future whilst remaining civil...

I thought mystress's question - what were the girls doing? - was a fair one. I read this morning that they had been seen around the massage parlour and the red light district before.

Does this mean they deserved to be attacked? No. Does it mean that there's a lot about this case we don't know? Yes. (I don't even know if today's report is true.) I want to know far, far more before I start stringing people up, and I don't think mystress should be criticised for querying the details either.

What makes this crime so dreadful is the abuse and torture that the girls suffered.
However here are five of the suggestions taken from above:

1. I think they should stuff in the same painful death

2. make them take the place of the rabbits, guinea-pigs and monkies in testing laboratories.

3. They should be released on an island and the highest bidder (oh we will raise millions ) should be allowed to pursue them and kill them.

4. I'd be more than happy to pull that ole lever - tease 'em �a bit by pulling it a little - stopping -pulling it again etc. Oh what fun!

5. I would walk them past an electric chair ,the hangman, the doctor with an evil grin and very large lethal injection needle, a blind man with a very large axe, a� plank over a vat of boiling oil then pick one ball out off a bowl of five.

May I ask each of the contributors of the above ideas to explain why thier proposals are not just as dreadful as the crime itself, and by what yardstick would the "executioner" be better than the criminal?

I agree, mystress's question is a perfectly valid question and the answer may indeed give clues to how this scenario which ended in such a tragic manner developed.  Were the girls hanging out doing drugs and then invited the men to join them or were the girls minding their own business when they were approached by the men (just two of many different possible scenarios)?  I agree that this in no way excuses the these men of such a vicious crime, but it is a valid piece of the puzzle.

This thread is so similar to the hanging thread a couple of weeks ago - and has become just as heated.  I made my feeling known on that.

I totally understand and agree with Didcot's sentiments in the posting above.   If we want to go back to being uncivilised then we should be prepared to accept all the other things that go with it - and that might involve being thrown in jail and left to rot for stealing a loaf of bread.

Of course I would feel like killing and mutilating anybody that commited such noxious crimes against anyone I loved, but laws prevent it - fortunately.  I can't believe either the comments that have been posted.   

This crime was deplorable and sickening.  Those that committed it should be jailed for LIFE,  and I mean LIFE.

Didwot - I don't agree with animal testing, but I realise that some drugs/ chemicals do need to be tested before being 'released' upon the public.  I think that criminals convicted of such hideous crimes could be used to be tested upon.

I don't think it is equal to raping, torturing and murdering a 16 year old girl and her friend.  I think it's pretty tame compared to what others may think that the attackers deserve.
