The Algerian government have now (understandably) declined to bury Merah on their soil.
The Mayor of Toulouse quite rightly has said it would be "inappropriate" for him to lie there too.
Given that Arab/Islamic countries are shunning the prospect of having terrorist's burial sites turned into shrines and places of homage for other 'martyrs', wouldn't a weighted bag in the Bay of Biscay be the best option, a la Bin Laden?

I don't know much about the case, but doesn't France have arrangements for disposing of 'unclaimed' bodies? I'd have thought the most sensible route would be the equivalent of a pauper's cremation and have done.
This is not an unclaimed body; the family wish him to be buried in Algeria.
Cause a real incident and use his body for medical research!! seriously cremation and scattering his ashes somewhere neutral sounds best
Oh, I see.
Well they've had it if Algeria says no.
The Mayor of Toulouse says it would be inappropriate but he can't refuse. Any french citizen can be buried in a cemetery so long as they have resided in that town. They might have to choose a cemetery of a former residence and try to keep it quiet..... how I don't know.
If they cremated a muslim the whole muslim congregation would be in an uproar....
Somewhere in the middle of the sahara in the dead of night no markings and all reference destroyed?
But which country of the sahara would accept that rowanwitch?

I have a feeling that as a result of the extreme circumstances of this case that the French authroties will not have him buried on their soil, for the reasons given in my OP.
Indeed, it's probably fair to assume that his burial site would doubtless be desecrated if it were anywhere on French soil.
The whole point is they mustn't know.. or how about Antarctica...no chance of anyone making a shrine there
Question Author
As I said, Bay of Biscay or somewhere off the coast of Algeria would be the best option.
Antarctica, alongside Scott and his party, rowan? Thanks but no...
This is a thought: if terrorists knew they'd be condemned to cremation maybe they would think twice?
Mince it up and use it as pig feed , no shrine, problem solved.
I'll se cond thar Baz

Only what was reported Ron, which is all any of us can go by.

Why, what's your theory?
Job done, in Toulouse ,in secret, in muslim part of cemetary.
I think Bin Laden and Elvis are living happily in the 1950s (or the Isle of Wight as it's sometimes known) ...
