Will you be part of redressing one of the worst injustices ever?

In 1977, the Sex Pistols got to number one with 'God Save The Queen'. It was never officially announced as the number one single (that 'honour' went to Rod Stewart's I Don't Want To Talk About It) - because it was seen as insensitive to the national mood at the time.

Is it now time to right this injustice and to go out (or stay in and download) and buy this song and give the Pistols the number one they were robbed of 35 years ago?

What an excellent idea - the record is still great after all these years.

The Sex Pistols demonstrated they can still cut it as a live band on their recent reunion tour, perhaps they should be invited to play at the concert in front of Buck House?

sp's point is that the establishment manipulated the stats in order to 'avoid embarassment' for her maj.

It seems that manipulation of statistics and lying to us the great british public is at least a consistent behaviour of our monarch's administrators

If they did get to no1 it wasn't because of talent. It was of reactionary anti British types making some sort of point by buying their drivel. I wouldn't call any of their outpourings music anyway.

That doesn't quite work because, by definition, Popular Music is whatever the listening public decide it is.

And the world wide audience decided in massive numbers (and continue to do so) that despite only ever producing one album and four singles, The Sex Pistils were, and remain one of the most influential bands in the history of Popular Music.

Counting in their several reunions over the years they are also one of the most enduring.

More of a Clash fan, but the Pistols did some good stuff.

it is widely believed in the music industry that at the time of the jubilee, reports from the retail monitors were that the pistols were outselling all others, closest to them being Rod Stewart.

Miraculously, when the official figures were compiled, Rod had pipped them to the top spot and the BBC didn't have to play it at the end of ToTP.

but like any massive movement in popular culture, the after effects on those who follow (emo, hardcore whatever) is impossible to calculate.

I agree with Zeuhl, the Sex Pistols were a hugely influential band whether you like them or not. You only have to read about the infamous Manchester Lesser Free trade hall gig in 1976 that has been voted as one of the most important concerts of all time to see this. Many of the people there were influenced and went on to have sucessful careers of their own:- Morrissey, Buzzcocks, Joy Division, Mark E Smith......
