What happens to the remains of suicide bombers? Are the body parts collected, identified, returned to the family and given a burial - or just disposed of?

I must admit that that ? has never crossed my mind before but I'm sure body parts will have to be identified to discover how many and who who the victims of the attack are. In Palestine I doubt they are returned (gosh, this is a morbid thread, Golem!) - already the bomber's family has everything confiscated, the house (living quarters) is (are) destroyed...

I feel anger and great sorrow at the same time for these people...total victims of brainwashing or what.

To be honest, I don't think there would be much of you left.

have to agree with margeb there.... I too wouldn't think that there would be much left - but am interested too what happens after?

To take the palestinian/muslim objective:

In return for ''martyrdom,'' the youths are told that their families will be financially compensated, their pictures will be posted in schools and mosques, and they will earn a special place in heaven.

They also are promised something more risqu: unlimited sex with 72 virgins in heaven. The Koran, describes the women as ''beautiful like rubies, with complexions like diamonds and pearls.'' In one of the passages of the Koran, it is said the martyrs and virgins shall ''delight themselves, lying on green cushions and beautiful carpets.'' Since the time of Mohammed, martyrs have always been considered those willing to die defending Islam.  For some young Muslims, that offer is too much to turn down.

A would-be bomber is selected for his mission only days, sometimes hours, before it is to occur. As part of the preparation, the recruit is taken to a cemetery, where he is told to prepare for death by lying between gravesites for hours. He wears a white, hooded shroud normally used to cover bodies for burial.

The recruit is then taken to a safe house. A video is made in which he states his consent to become a suicide bomber and his devotion to Islam. It will be played for the public after his death. A still photograph is taken that will be reproduced and displayed through the West Bank and Gaza to honor him after death.

An example - two Hamas operatives drove a young man to the Dolphin Disco in Tel Aviv, a popular club often packed with Russian immigrant teenagers. They said the bomber slipped unnoticed into line and positioned himself among several girls, including a 14-year-old who had survived an attack in Netanya.

contd

Then, while flirting with one of the girls, he triggered the explosives. The blast was so intense that it tore limbs from the victims' bodies, scattered their flesh up to six blocks away and vaporized the bomber and the girl next to him.

His father said afterwards ''I wish I had done (the bombing). My son has fulfilled the Prophet's (Mohammed's) wishes. He has become a hero! Tell me, what more could a father ask?''

As said above, the only likely remains are the video and photograhs.

Incidentally, suicide is a major sin in Islam and is prohibited in the Quran:

Sura 2:195 And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good

Each bombing is different but in a lot of cases the body is still recognizable and will be buried.

For people with strong stomachs you can see what the aftermath often looks like here. You've been warned.

Can we have a few people report the above post please? Disgusting link.

No way anyone can report that. It brings home what you never see, only hear what happened. That's how "life" works, disgusting or not...

It forces you to wonder what life is all about and our everyday gripes and groans - are they justified? Horror abounds and I just don't realise how lucky I am.

The link does come with a fair warning.  A warning that at least one user chose to ignore.  I think that some of us need to see the reality, not the sanitised version the TV news shows us.  I leave it to ABE's discretion.  Users "ganging up" on a member will only lead to censorship on a difficult matter.

If people want further warning, the link actually takes you to a page of further links.  Clicking on it will not reveal any horrible images... YET.  However, clicking on any of the other links will either invite you to download videos, or will immediately show you colour photographs of dismembered body parts.

It's pretty vile, and sick and wrong.  But it's down to personal preference whether you look or not.

I was referring mostly to the 'Farm Girls' and 'Forced Sex' plastered all over the same link.
Didn't notice that bit MargeB.  I didn't look at the ads.  Well again, if it's only links, it's people's free choice.  Now you've warned them, they can make a rational choice based on full information.  That's the way to result in allocative effiiciency, so bring it on! :-)

I agree with MargeB - some children doing their homework might just be a tad inquisitive & take a peep. It might give them nightmares!

AB is a family site after all.

Apart from the links, I just don't get the ogrish et al attraction. I do now a few people that are regular viewers, but I know it would do me very little good and possibly more than a little harm to look at this stuff. I think it has a generally brutalizing effect. I am quite aware of what a beheading involves, thank you, and quite aware that it goes on in the world, I don't need some weird site to show me it in all its glory. 'It's what the world is like'. There is no such thing as 'the world'. There are a billion different things going on in a billion different moments, the ones I choose to expose myself to form my 'world'.
Good point.  I always forget about people allowing their kids to use the internet unsupervised.  I'm with you now MargeB.  Only cos of bad parents mind you!  But still - who cares why I vote eh?  Just how!
Question Author

Thanks to the ABE for allowing the question, although I think it was banned early on and subsequently restored.

I was hoping to avoid becoming distracted by the more sensationalist aspect of the topic and thanks to Octavius for his well-considered answer, as always. It does seem to indicate that there is a pseudo-funeral prior to the act that maybe fulfils the role that traditionally takes place with the body present and provides the 'closure' that relatives need. The original question remains however. I was a paramedic for 12 years and dealt with some terrible situations and there are very strict guidelines on how to handle human remains that are culturally and religiously sensitive. I just wondered what the differences were in the circumstances we're discussing.

AB Editor, I take my hat off to you, wit and genius. I would have never thought of that idea.

Golem - I think that in the circumstances of the aftermath of such an act, that common decency and respect for the perpetrator goes out the window.  The authorities may handle the remains of the victims with some level of decorum (return to relatives etc) but it is very doubtful that the same would happen with the bomber.  Interesting and thought provoking question, but with the act being so inhumane and barbaric I doubt any authority would publicise or advise what it has done with the bombrs left overs and we may never know.

they are disposed of with all due respect, in a "Bombatorium".
