Can Britain continue to take in this amount of migrants?
/// Paul Nuttall, Ukip deputy leader, said: “These figures show how the simple character of the country is being changed beyond recognition. The Government must become more serious about controlling immigration because these changes are happening without the say so of the people. ///
/// “Our public services, schools, hospitals and housing cannot support this kind of growth. It is the weakness and ignorance of successive Governments that have let it happen.” The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, show 487,000 of the 566,00 long-term immigrants entering Britain last year did not hold UK passports. ///
Then how the h&ll did they get in?

” The figures, from the Office for National Statistics, show 487,000 of the 566,00 [sic] long-term immigrants entering Britain last year did not hold UK passports. When those 566,000 arriving were set against the 350,000 people who left the country over the same period total net immigration into UK stood at 216,000."
I make that 591 a day, not 1,300

It is not just about the NUMBERS that come in and go out.
What do the people who leave take OUT of the country :- money, skills, spending power.
And what do many of the people who come in bring :- no money, little skills, inability to speak English, desire to milk the benefit system for as much as they can.
THATS the real problem.

487,000 who entered Britain last year did not hold UK passports.
487,000 divided by days in a year (365) = 1,334.
Actually 34 more than the headline figure of 1,300.

Is it true that immigrants typically come to the UK to milk the benefits system or is it nearer the truth to say that many are economic migrants who come over short term to work in the building trade, facilities management, hospitality etc?
Did anyone see the first series of 'The Hotel'? This was a fantastic documentary about the staff of a hotel whose name I forget. Anyway, practically the entire staff were from various Eastern European countries. Hard working and displaying obvious 'get up and go' to find work.
Is it not possible to think of it this way...we have people coming into the UK to find work, whereas we have people born in Britain who wouldnt even consider moving to the next town to find work.

Another question - I work in technology delivery and we rely HEAVILY on development and systems management skills, delivered by an Indian outsourcing company. We have a rota of staff who come onsite for a year. If all inward migration was stopped, we would be stuffed.
We don't have vast reservoirs of specific coding and operational support in he UK. An immigration freeze would severely compromise our ability to compete against European rivals.

It's too late now, by the time they are realising that there are more and more arriving, more and more children are being born here claiming British citizenship. Not too long ago people were called racist for saying anything at all about the numbers that were living here, claiming benefits, demanding large houses to live in. Something should have been done when Tony Blair decided it was open season on us. Regardless of our own children unable to find jobs on leaving school and being unable to afford to buy their own homes. Sorry this subject really p*sses me off.
AYG I feel exactly the same and despair when I think of what it is going to be like and no amount of hand wringing in years ahead will change anything. I find it very sad that this country will be changed forever which is not of our doing...sigh. Politicians have a lot to answer for but they don't give a jot as long as they get what they want and have a "cushy" life long after their careers are over (far removed from the ordinary people too IMO).
As rojash pointed out, that headline figure of 1300 immigrants per day does not take into account of those leaving. But then I guess just under 600 per day doesn't make for quite such a sensational headline.
AOG, Sir Andrew Green's figure of a population growth of 5 million in 15 years as a result of immigration is a fantasy figure based on the assumption that immigrant communities will continue to maintain the birth rate of their country of origin. However, a long term study in, if memory serves, Holland, showed that over time immigrant birth rates drop to the same level at that of the host country, so I'd take his 5 million figure with a very large pinch of salt.
And finally, it's hardly a surprise that immigrants do not hold UK passports - after all they are citizens of other countries and therefore not entitled to hold a UK passport. But it is a valid statement, even if it is there simply to raise the hackles of the target readership of the paper before they can get their brains in gear.
