Currently the Common Agricultural Policy subsidises farming in Europe to the tune of 40% of the total EU budget and yet only 5% of europeans are farmers and the fruits (sic) of this agricultural labour constitutes only 2% of GDP. We see very little of this money in the UK since we, like a lot of the northern european nations, have a more industry-based economy (although the manufacturing element of this is rapidly diminishing whilst the service element seems to be rocketing).
The rebate redresses the balance of our miniscule return from the EU pot.
