the police who taserd a blind man with a white stick "with no verbal warning" want sacking,if you cant tell the difference between a white stick and a samurai sword at 30ft it (there very different) beggars belief the were accepted in the force !
Surely that's the point of training em10? Instruct existing officers in the use of new equipment.
The offending officer's account of events would make interesting reading I'm sure, not that taxpayers are likely to be considered worthy of such information.
OK...you are a police officer and in a backstreet of Chorley following a report of a man roaming the streets with a Samurai sword.
Low and behold, in front of you is a man with something in his hand (white stick as it turns out) and you shout at him to stop.
He ignores your request.
The brain has stored "sword, white"weapon" in his hand, ignored your command".....you are dead scared.........
A shot of electricity seems appropriate in the circumstances.
Consider instead that you are actually not a retired clinician but actually a highly trained police officer probably with several year experience, you're armed with a taser, pepper spray a baton.
You have a radio to call for help and you're probably with a coleague too!
In a way I agree with you Jake, but, in the the light of recent events (2 Police murdered) maybe I would be a tad scared too. Wouldn't you, or perhaps your a hard b***d ?
Well let's face it there are different levels of policemen - one of my martial arts instructors is a policeman and he'd have loved a sword wielding nut to bits!
The policewomen killed earlier were clearly "soft targets"
We also don't know the facts - was the stick raised for some reason perhaps?
Despite all that with all the training and resources at their disposal I still think it's reasonable to expect a better standard of decision making than this.
I suspect a lot of the police will agree too - I don't think this is likely to be representative of the police in general though
Sqad - I'm a human being first as well, but then I'm not a policeman. If the police are going to be given weapons they need to be "Highly Trained policemen" first, otherwise they may become as much of a danger to the rest of us as the people they're supposed to protect us from.
It seems to me that this particular copper was scared before he even saw the blind man and, if so, he should never have been sent in.
squad
"Mr Farmer said he heard shouting on the street but did not know what it was about and thought he was about to be “attacked by some hooligans”"....... i think most people would think that! squad so instead they hit him in the back !!
