The Contras in Nicaragua were armed and finances by the Americans during Reagan's 'watch'.
America never supported the Irish Republicans. Some Senators, with an eye to the Irish voters in their constituencies, interested themselves in our affairs. Senator King of New York comes to mind.

But I have not made a mistake have I darling?
No, not 2 faced at all.

Fund raising and support from individual americans with irish ancestry and a romanticized image of the struggle for freedom is a far cry from the US state supporting the IRA.

The peace process owes a great debt of gratitude to the efforts of the US administration, especially the Clintons.

I also stated Americans never once did I say American government
But -you provided a link to Hilary Clinton making a statement condeming the murder of the Prison Officer as your examples of american two-facedness.

She was speaking as a representative of the US administration, and it was Bill Clinton who was particularly influential in the peace process.
They did harbour on the run terrorists and refused to extradite them.
I can't remember any Irish Republican being granted political asylum in the USA. A few spent years in American prisons fighting extradition, unsuccessfully.
I'd need to check, but I seem to remember quite a few making the news when I lived back home.
And when it comes to extradition, the US may well point fingers at the UK as being "shelterers of terrorists" with the refusal to extradite Gary McKinnon and the sending back of al-megrahsi to Libya.
Thank you so much LazyGun, let's hope that friedgreentomato
will now be gracious enough to apologize.
Given that we jailed Megrahi I wouldn't think that that instance falls under the "shelterers of terrorists" label, but these things are relative and the Americans may well beg to differ.

Why should I apologise I have not been proved wrong.
Nor do I see anything offensive in your posts.
@FGT

Your original post suggested that Hilary Clintons message condeming the killing of the Prison Officer in NI was murder exposed the US to charges of hypocrisy.

That is plainly untrue, unless you can demonstrate that the US administration had an official policy, publically stated, of support for the IRA - and you cannot, because they never have.

On the contrary, we owe a debt of gratitude to the the US administration under the Clinton era for their help in brokering the peace process.

Lazy gun you are entitled to your own opinion as to the American government and the ira as am I.

/// Lazy gun you are entitled to your own opinion as to the American and the ira as am I. ///

The difference being that both Lazy Gun and I have provided the evidence, whereas you have only made unsubstantiated accusations against the American Government.
In defence of FGT,

Fund raising for the IRA was done on an individual basis, but the American Government did not outlaw it until the Clinton's and Governor Mitchell got involved in the peace process. So the American Government have changed their tune. They should not be castigated for that however, but congratulated.
// I think 911 changed the Ameticans thinking as regard to terrorist attacks on home soul. //

True. Terrorism became less popular in the states after 911. Gerry Adams and Martin Mcguiness stopped getting invited to fancy parties in Washington. Even Teddy Kennedy became embarrassed about associating with them.
I can believe almost anything Ludwig, but a Kennedy being embarrassed about something?
//////Also, I think 911 changed the Ameticans thinking as regard to terrorist attacks on home soul. When it was happening in Northern Ireland, London, Birmingham and Manchester, it was a long way away. When it happened in New York their whole thinking changed.//////

It still has not changed that much. Only few places has changed. New frontiers like Star War.
