The man who defaced a painting by Mark Rothko has been sentenced to two years in prison. Is this long enough to deter other mindless vandals?

It would entirely depend upon the strength of the individuals feelings I suppose.
no, many do it on the spur of the moment, perhaps the person has other problems, is disturbed by the painting. How about instead of jail he does some much needed reparation, work in the gallery, cleaning for a start, or help in a homeless shelter, give something back to the community.
He did it as promotion for his own art movement. There seems to be a kneejerk reaction planned where additional security may prevent people getting close to valuable artworks. Once again some numpty in an ivory tower penalises the vast majority because of the actions of a very very small minority.
