I saw this the other day - and her father has been given a job here. Good news indeed.

// The family of the 15-year-old Pakistani girl being treated in Britain after being shot in the head by the Taliban will be able to stay in the country for up to five years after her father was given a job in Birmingham //

Splendid news. Great to see they are putting down some roots in a safer country. I hope they will all be very happy here.
""...she will undoubtedly be a huge asset to the cause of women's rights in the Arab world "

What? Living in Birmingham? (Where she will almost certainly remain - or in the UK at least - for the rest of her life). I'm afraid I do not share your optimism, NOX.

Something else I find a little odd is that we are told that the Pakistani government paid for her treatment. British residents who pay "to go private" are castigated for "jumping the queue". But not in this case. Why is that?
Maybe her treatment had some urgency about it?
Maybe advised by the Embassy, so she would not be seen as a 'Health Tourist'
Question Author
time will tell whether she either returns home or indeed is an asset to the world. i wish her well.
It was obvious from the day she arrived here she wouldn't go back. Now her and her family can get on their soapboxes and continue their campaign from here.
what do you mean by //get on their soapboxes// pdq?
Its an English saying!
Question Author
is it? not very charitable don't you think..
You must live a very sheltered life. Never heard of orators getting on their soap boxes at Speakers Corner (otherwise known as Hyde Park Corner)

"Above" the left eye........would indicate that the facial nerve was preserved.\\\

I was wrong.....i have seen better photographs of her and it is clear that the facial muscles around the eye are involved and this means that the facial nerve has been transected......a big big problem, as her face will always be paralyzed and she will have eye problems as the result of inability to close it.

pdq, i haven't believe it or not, and know speakers corner well. However i was searching to see if the origin of the words originally come from England, would suggest that it's quite universal. I am not a cockney sparrow, but know plenty of people who are and am familiar with most of the lingo.
Question Author
the further news report say that she will require quite a lot of further surgery, poor lass.

Idiom: Get on your soapboxIdiom Definitions for 'Get on your soapbox'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

///If someone on their soapbox, they hold forth (talk a lot) about a subject they feel strongly about.///

Question Author
i know the expression, perhaps my last post wasn't clear enough, i was trying to see if it originated elsewhere, as you put English as opposed to British or other. why should it matter by the way.
Question Author
i also meant that i hadn't led a sheltered life, not ever.
