Just heard on the BBC News that the CoEngland are to allow gay bishops....

if they remain celibate and renounce their past activities.

Now isn't that an exercise in redundancy, hypocrisy whatever and shows the CoE to be as progressive and in touch as they are with the appointment of female Bishops?

What a cock-up to borrow the expression......

Ridiculous - what a stupid standpoint
Perhaps by the time a chap has reached the age when he'd be considered for elevation to the Bishop's Throne the powers that be in the C of E consider him to be beyond carnal desires.
Sandy, maybe the RC church authorities thought the same regarding placing small boys in the 'care' of Priests?
NJ, all religion defies belief. Nevertheless, some people whether it be women who are treated unequally, or those who have their sex lives dictated to them, seem to need it - probably because they think it's their passport to cheating death. ;o)
homosexuality is not against Christianity; homosexual activity is.
And the difference is.....?

You can look but mustn't touch? You can think but can't do? I give up.
of course there's a difference, and you have identified it precisely.

Think that I will stick to being a sinner, but not because of this line of thinking.....it is unbelievable in this day and, to me, shows how far short of public perception and reality they are. If they fundamentally do not believe in condoning homosexuality and its implicit relationships, then they should take leadership and say so in the clearest manner.

That lack of leadership is the legacy that Williams leads behind, the issue on the hotel with gay customers down here in Marazion, the one in Chester, the wearing of crosses on BA and in hospitals all being cases where the Bishoprics or Canterbury did not stand up or be counted.

Welby has a real mess to sort out come March. Good luck to him.
Homosexual acts are sinful. Promise not to indulge and you can be a Bishop. How naive of the powers that be.
You are female? Sorry you cannot be a full member of the clergy. You can however be 2nd class, run a parish, preach, conduct funerals etc. Do the boring bits that a man is too exalted to take on.
Are women inherently sinful because they are women?
It's all Dave's fault.

I would think that 50 year old men are more than capable of having sex of any form.....of the more senior bishops the Bish of Coventry is the youngest at 53.....

This celibacy and denial is, quite simply, ridiculous and worthy of a Monty Pythonesque comedy sketch. I hope "Have I Got News For You" take them apart.
It seems that the Church of England's biggest mistake here is in trying to move with the times, albeit not being able to completely. Perhaps it should have kept schtum and carried on as usual.
The whole thing's ridiculous. The church is becoming a laughing stock, which is inevitable for an organisation based on a dodgy book written over a thousand years ago. It's floundering around trying to maintain some kind of relevance to modern society and failing miserably.
Is it ok to be female or gay or both or not? They just can't seem to work it out.
DT, it was the very word renounce which put me in mind of the Spanish Inquisition sketch. 15th C language in an effort to modernise. Oh dear oh dear.
Ah!, that's ok then, they can renounce their past, but can continue as long as the bishop doesn't enjoy it..... Gives a new meaning to "bashing the bishop"?
//It's floundering around trying to maintain some kind of relevance to modern society and failing miserably. //

Precisely. As far as I can see it is the only major religious organisation that is attempting to keep pace with modern life - and since it’s impossible for religion to cling to ancient dogma whilst at the same time attempting to be seen as progressive, it is consistently making an arse of itself. If it wants to survive and to maintain its credibility, it has to decide where it stands - and have the guts to stick it its principles.
I think it is just a way to get round an outright ban.
For a Gay vicar it will still be a case of ' Long time , no See'.
I suppose the phase ''bashing the Bishop'' is going to be banned now ?
