Things have apparently been improving markedly since the mid-1990s, which makes you wonder how bad things were back then.
For all that this is a horrific incident and we can only hope that it won't be repeated and those responsible are punished severely.

/believe me its not improved /
what improvements were you expecting? exactly?
or is that just a fabrication to now attach feigned disappointment to?
Bearing in mind that the country has to haul 95% of its population out of dire poverty whilst not pissing off the 5% who were the only ones equipped to maintain its First World infrastructure the only thing that could have been expected were PROBLEMS.
I expect the most disappointed South Africans aren't the privileged whites who now have to employ a few extra security guards
It's the blacks in the townships who no doubt expected to be rather better off by now.

Well statistically at least things are apparently improving. I wouldn't want to comment on whether or not the statistics reflect reality as they can of course be distorted, etc., and so far as I can make out my source is the South African Police Service. Also this is from the period 1997 - 2010 so doesn't include the last two years or so.
Crime`s gone through the roof in SA. We`ve had to move hotels there (been using the same one for years) because it`s got so dangerous. I think the third armed robbery of the hotel reception was the last straw. One of my colleagues was held up at gun point the other week. Shame really as it`s a lovely country. I hope they can sort out their crime problem but I fear there`s a long way to go.
"and things won't improve until they have a less corrupt government"
good luck with that one.
call it racist I couldnt care less, one gets used to it on here, but as long as blacks are running it out there, they have very little chance of being more than a typical african banana republic
looks like theyll end up doinng a mugabe out there, kick all the whites out that know anything about anything and the place will slowly crumble and fall apart.
always a good move to take back productive farms that employ hundreds of thousands from people who know about farming and give them to "war veterans" who know exactly what about farming ?
Kill two birds with one stone, increase the unemployment and decrease your food and exports output in one easy move
Yup agronomy and agriculture is thriving under mugabe, SA will no doubt gradually go the same way as the blacks take back whatever they can irrespective of whether they know anything about the particular business or industry, and then all the various black tribes will start fighting each other and on it goes.
Ever wondered to yourself why China is "buying up" Africa

I haven`t seen any evidence of blacks taking white farms back. I was out in the rural areas in November and the farmers (and winery owners) that I saw were still white. It`s true that most of the staff that you see in supermarkets/hotels etc are now black. That seemed to happen really quickly. I have also noticed that the lookout towers at crossroads have disappeared. I`m presuming (hoping) that means the carjacking has decreased. I hope so anyway.
