Thanks em10 but its irrelevant to the discussion about the £3.6 million used for Mr T's funeral. Anyway, as your link seems to come from a website called Conservative Home Left Watch, could it be considered a reliable, unbiased version of the events ?
she saved the country X amount of money, well wasn't that in the job description? however much the funeral was it shouldn't have come out of tax payers money. like someone said, she died a very wealthy woman
whilst i knew you would say that about the link, there are plenty of other sites which indicate the same thing. I just don't have the time, patience to sift through them all.

Way back in 1990 when she left Number 10, Maggie was estimated to have a personal wealth of £9.5m. Her autobiography, published in 1993, secured a £3.2m advance from the publishers; and even a decade later she could demand tens of thousands for a speaking engagement in the USA.

And darling Sir Mark has a quoted £60m+; admittedly from dubious sources.

When we bury a loved one the cost is found from the estate or family. Wonder why that didn't happen in the case of Mrs Ding Dong!
wouldn't much of that wealth have been generated from her husbands business. When she married him he was already a millionaire, so is the personal wealth not part of that estate.
Question Author
Maybe, maybe not em.

The point being made is that families pay for funerals.
I was only pointing out the irrelevance of the link. We are discussing the cost of her funeral, nothing to do with shutting down coal mines.
i was responding to the constant barracking of the woman over the closure of the mines, sunny dave was the last one, and any number of people on here, have posted the same, that more mines were closed under labour than conservatives, so why don't they damn well bang on about that.
and i would imagine that part of her personal fortune was from her husband, and whatever her father may have left her. Not to mention money earned from being PM and later speaking engagements. Makes me wonder that the jealously over her personal fortune is really the argument.
Sir prize, is it just maggie's or do you believe that no funerals should be publicly funded?
ummmm

/// AOG - This is a family site. Why do you think we have a swear filter? ///

An example of what I mean, would you tell such a 'joke' to a 15 year old girl?

WARNING Sharingan, please do not read this.

/// The Lone Ranger was taking a piss in the bushes when a rattler jumped up and bit him right on the head of his d*ck...

"Quick Tonto" he shouts, "Ride to town and get the Doc"...

The Doc tells Tonto "I cant go with you, but if you suck out the poison, he'll live"

When Tonto returns, The Lone Ranger says "Tonto, what did the Doc say..?"

Tonto replies "Kimosabi, you gonna die!" ///

No one is jealous of Maggie. Just bewildered why the taxpayer met the cost of her 'going-away party', rather than the family. Will the State do the same for all of us?

AOG - thanks for those well thought out words. However, somewhat misplaced.
'We' only contributed to the part of her funeral costs, her family paid for the remainder.

She's been dead for 18 days now.....for how much longer do you anticipate making sour posts about her?
have a read, it sheds some light on her so called personal wealth.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2013/apr/09/margaret-thatcher-estate-family-secret
its a sour post, and a sour comment, would you say the same about any other leaders send off, or is it just the woman you hate.
I admired Margaret Thatcher and thought she was a great politician. She was also unique so far in becoming a woman prime minister. This thread is beyond sour grapes - it is venomous. Not sure the point of it other than to demonstrate a personal hatred which is not shared by everyone.
Grass, I think in this case the obsessive hatred is being used as a way of denying the guilt of admiration and love. :)

She is blatantly going to read it if you write that.

And the "joke" is really pretty tame....
She was given a funeral with full military honours.
The Chelsea Pensioners were present, none were forced to go, those that did did so voluntarily.
The argument over cost really has become moot now, it's a piffling amount compared to what is wasted every day.
The woman was held in such high regard by HM Forces that I'd wager that to a man they'd have given their services for free anyway.

There are very few that would garner such loyalty and respect.

It's over, leave it be now.
