Bill Roache has apparently been arrested on a sex claim about an incident in 1967 when he's supposed to have raped a 15 year old girl!

It is becoming crazy. How on earth do you defend yourself against this after such a length of time? I find it hard to believe that there would be any proof whatsoever - even if the allegation was true.

No doubt trial by media will finish him off.

Not commenting on this case in particular...but there is a fairly failsafe way of establishing whether someone had sex with an underage girl - and it doesn't matter when it happened.

It's if the girl in question got pregnant.

If she kept the child, then a DNA test could determine whether or not the accused is the father. And then it's just a matter of doing the maths to work out the mother's age at the child's birth, and then her age at conception.

If she elected to have an abortion, historical records would show how many weeks old the foetus was, and again from that, you could determine the age of the mother at conception.

Would they have kept DNA from an aborted foetus in 1967? If not it proves nothing. The girl could have got pregnant by anyone. True if the child was kept then proof would be there.

After nearly 50 years, I doubt very much that a DNA would hold up in court and certainly the foetus would have been disposed of.

One is now getting to the stage whereby one is asking oneself "Have i touched any female inappropriately?"

i cannot remember some of the woman that i may have had contact with almost half a century ago and i certainly couldn't be sure that my conduct was "acceptable" and would remain so for the rest of my life.

Arrested does not necessarily mean charged....just a fine point of distinction.

I would imagine a lot of men might have touched a woman or girl inappropriately at some time in their past. While I think it's a good thing that sexual predators are brought to account for their behaviour, I would hate to see this reduced to perfectly decent men regretting pinching someone's bum in 1965.

It's all gone a bit crazy. Unless there's a child, how on earth can anyone prove anything one way or another? If there was a child there would, very probably, have been maintenance payments. Perhaps that's what this woman is after now, backdated maintenance for a child?

No - they would necessarily have foetal DNA records, but if the record of termination ties in date-wise with alleged conception, it could be used as corroboration.

But that could be dismissed far easier than DNA from a surviving child.
