I remember watching the sailing at the Olympics and thinking this is a tough old sport.

We don't race, we now only sail for pleasure rather than competition and the sailng game is still relatively new to me (6 years) as opposed to the Captain who has sailed for 36 years. But we have had some hairy moments in Force 9 gales and the Captain's tales of sailing the Fastnet and the Atlantic are enough to make my hair stand on end.
A sad story, and it must have been very frightening even for a seasoned sailor.

Yes very tragic and I am sure all our thoughts go out to his family.
Having watched this on the news I was amazed how flimsy and unstable the vessel seemed to be, I am no sailor but it seemed that a strong gust of side wind would soon tip this vessel over, it is amazing that there was only one fatality, but of course that was one too many.
RIP.
