Is it worth the £50million cost to commemorate a war that started 100 years ago?
/// In a major speech in November setting out his ambitions for the centenary, David Cameron revealed two pupils and a teacher from every state secondary school will be given the chance to visit the great battlefields, such as the Somme, Verdun and Fromelles, and take part in remembrance ceremonies on the Western Front. ///
How will the pupils be selected, will it be on a certain achievement basis, showing no attention to ethnicity?
I ask this because in equality photos such as this one, pupils of Far Eastern origin always seem to be missing from such photo shoots, how can that be fair?

I only ask because you accused jake of being anti-British, and quoted, as your evidence , the statement that World War I had those effects. Why?

No, I don't agree that photo shoots must show the diverse ethnicity of our country. However, that you urge it immediately confirms that you are far from being even mildly racist (which, I think, has been suggested falsely on here)
And, by the same token, it's entirely appropriate that Jews should be represented. They too are a minority, and one represented in both World Wars. Just because they are not black or brown does not mean they should be excluded. Why do you insist that we have to be able to guess the ancestry from colour, and that all colours be represented?

\\\Is it worth the £50million cost to commemorate a war that started 100 years ago? \\
No, I don't think it is and all that is needed is Remembrance Sunday to remind us of those that fell in 1914-18.
\\\revealed two pupils and a teacher from every state secondary school will be given the chance to visit the great battlefields, such as the Somme, Verdun and Fromelles, and take part in remembrance ceremonies on the Western Front. ///\\\
An excellent idea and preference should be given to the children that have shown an interest in history. Going back to my school days, history was taught badly and the highlight was going to the cinema to see Henry Vth.
I could not give a logical answer as to when the British Empire collapsed as well as colonialism and i cannot see what that would add to the OP.
All in all...........a good idea.

The £50m quote is disingenuous. £35m of that is for a major refurbishment and remodelling of the Imperial War Museum which has been on the cards for a number of years.
"In summer 2014, we will launch the first phase of our masterplan, with the opening of brand new First World War Galleries, our new atrium and terrace displays, new shops, toilets and a café that will open directly onto Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park."
Funding is also coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Aside from that, I'm sure some of those foreign types will visit London and marvel at our wonderfully modern facility. Maybe even a few far eastern kids from the local comp.

And can you pick a person who happens to be a Jew, from a group of other people who have no particular racial features, one might say why are there no Polish people, Romanians etc etc?
/// Why do you insist that we have to be able to guess the ancestry from colour, and that all colours be represented ///
It is not I who insists that all colours be represented, only when it is obvious some have been represented as a total gesture, but seeing they have obviously gone down that path judging by the photo, then it is only fair that all obvious racial types should be included.
It is not a fact of skin colour but of racial facial differences, and it is easy to differentiate between a black person, an Indian person, and a Chinese or Japanese person, but one cannot differentiate between religions unless of course they happen to be wearing distinguishable clothing.
