Whereas it was completely wrong for a pregnant woman to be attacked by two men, In a separate incident Was it right for the French police to be attacked by a mob of 60 for enforcing the French burkha ban?

But the law is ridiculous - unenforceable in practice, and likely to cause the sort of unrest we have seen. I love France, but they have a shocking record when it comes to race relations.
There is a village in Spain "banned the burkha" despite the fact that not a sngle Moslem lives there :-)

don't you think we have given something up then, i think we have, the right to make our own laws, EU interference, the right to say i don't like to see women wearing the Burkha, it doesn't go down well with some either on AB or in the outside world, and the right to wonder how we will ever cope if there is a civil war because we were bending over backwards to accommodate ever other culture except our own.
not one year, two was the minimum for full mourning. Then you could work your way down through grey etc. But widows were free to stay in mourning all their lives if they wanted. It was one way of deterring prospective suitors, as well as a way of remembering the deceased.
It wasn't a particularly religious requirement, though, so atheists ought to be able to understand it.

a stupid way of doing things, pretty much like much of the so called enlightened Victorian times, where poverty was rife and prostitution and child abuse was rife. I have never believed anyone should kow tow to cultural, religious dogma, We are not sheep.

Em10 you haven't had your right to say you don't like to see women wearing the Burkha taken away, that would be a denial of your right to Freedom of Speech which you can still have (just) in the UK. UK still makes its own Laws, but I agree totally about the EU but thats straying off the OP. Surely true Freedom and Integration is to accept Humanity in all its diversity and allow people to be 'different'. Think 'Startrek' -all those Aliens mixing together not expecting a Klingon to dress like a Vulcan.
Is there a reason Burkahs have to be black, it is such a bleak colour.
When a gaggle of them approach you, it is like a big cloud decending.
White burkahs are out of the question, unless the lady is called Casper.
I am sure they wouldn't look half as bad if they were in pastel colours, or a cheery pattern. The black ones are so last century.

they do wear a range of colours... they probably just think that looking drab fits in with the British climate better

I think it is the most horrendous attire, and if a western country passes a law banning them so be it. I dread to think if everybody wore them we would not recognise anyone, it would be like a country of the walking dead. When we visit Islamic countries we cover our arms and legs because that is their law.
The way Victorians dressed – or how nuns dress – is irrelevant. The Victorian age is long gone – and nuns do not cover their faces. The biggest objection to the burqa is not the colour or length of the dress, but that it covers the face, segregating the wearer from the rest of society by rendering her unidentifiable. Fred is right. For those who are able to make the choice to wear it – and we must bear in mind that many Muslim women aren’t afforded a choice - it is an emblem – it’s a uniform worn specifically to display solidarity and defiance of western politics and western culture. Twenty or thirty years ago in cities such as cosmopolitan Cairo, the burqa was conspicuous by its absence – but the same cannot be said now. Western people who support a woman’s ‘right’ to wear it are, in fact, condoning a man’s right to retain his power and control over his women-folk by allowing him to continue to force them into subjugation. You, who are at liberty to speak out, are doing those who, even in their new lives, remain silently bound to the appalling tenets of a backward ideology, a great disservice. You think you speak for freedom - but you don't.
