One of our UK barristers thinks the legal age of consent should be lowered to 13.
In light of the recent Jeremy Forrest case do you agree with the barrister or should we keep the age as it is at 16.

Biggest problem with this is we make an arbitrary call to protect kids but they all mature at such a different rate a 15yo may be far more mature than a 20yo. In terms of the law 16 is reasonable to me but when the law comes into it, courts should be assessing the maturity of the individuals involved.
Slapshot, good idea but not practical. Imagine the uproar if the courts decided a 14 year old was mature enough for sex and prosecuted a man for having sex with a 15 year old because the courts deemed her immature.
A potential partner would not only have to consider her age but also get some sort of clarification that she was mature enough.

Ages of consent vary throughout Europe - Germany 14; France 15; Iceland 15; Ireland 17; Italy 14 but 13 if the eldest is no more than 16; Malta 18; Poland 15; Portugal 14...
And then some countries have different ages for homosexual acts. It would be impossible to make all EU countries agree to the same age.

I remember being a 13 year old girl. I had a 15 year old boyfriend and my parents were going spare because of the massive age difference then - but that's the point. At 13, even 2 years can be a massive gap. He was pressuring me to have sex, but I was strong willed even then so told him it wasn't happening. I dumped him and he moved on to a girl his own age who would sleep with him.
IMO, 16 is the right age for sexual consent. 13 is just far too young, not an adult, but not a child either. We don't go from being a child to an adult overnight, there is a period of transition and we should still protect our youth from themselves and others during it.
