Should There Be An Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants?

Ah yes I now remember, but with Boris the Mayor of London also seeking it, I thought it would put an entirely different slant on it.
There was a late night phone-in about it last night conducted by the radio station where he made his comments LBC.
Although the presenter was in the minority he still could not see a reason why they should not get an amnesty, his only defence being he would rather know who was in the country than not knowing.
I wondered if he would then also know each and everyone of them on a first name basis?

No - but for reasons thus far not raised.
Illegal immigrants work cash in hand in very low paid jobs (agriculture, textiles, au pairs, maids, cab drivers etc).
Now, if they were granted leave to remain, they would immediately be eligible for benefits which are already available to those on low wages, which would increase the burden on the state at a time when cuts are being made to public services.
Some may argue that their legal status would result in extra tax revenue coming in from their salaries, but the Treasury would have to do some serious number crunching on this, because I (as a non-economist), don't think the revenues on these very low paid positions would be that great.

One such illegal immigrant phoned the radio station to say that he had been in this country illegally for a number of years, and continued to say what a miserable life he was leading, staying at various friends houses, not able to form a relationship and set up a family, get educated, get a job, go to university.
The presenter then asked him if he had ever been ill and used the NHS, to which he replied "yes he had", the presenter further went on to ask him how he had managed that, and he said he still had the original papers that he received when he first applied for citizenship, and the government knew he was still here, but had given up seeking him out.
