It seems rather sinister to me that private mail is intercepted and read by a third party. Does this happen for all 11 year olds mail? Was this girl singled out? What were the teachers hoping to find? It seems grossly over the top if it was to catch children eating sweets. I also believe banning an 11 year old from eating chocolate on holiday is extremely strict. If...

I don't know the circumstances but it seems it was a 'no eating in rooms' rule that had been signed up to. Children aren't allowed to eat crisps, drink cred bull or use phones in lessons but you'd be surprised how many parents will argue their child should be allowed to. Would you say they should be allowed to eat in class also if parents give permission?

More from another idiot who works for the council, are all those involved really that thick?

Hertfordshire County Council said: “The room was only searched with the child’s agreement. It is normal procedure to check the contents of a letter.”

So that's ok then! The poor kid was probably terrified after being surrounded by half a dozen teachers, no wonder she "agreed."

andy-hughes, what has eating a bar of chocolate got to do with H&S? Stop trying to defend all those clowns from the council downwards along with the teachers. The real kids in this farce were the teachers!
J-J- if someone has a nut allergy in the dormitory then there would be rules. I read about a flight where peanuts were banned because a one nut allergy sufferer was flying
Jude, have you ever taken a group of eleven year olds on a residential trip? Just wondering.
I think the full story may emerge. Do you believe the Sun gives fair honest accounts? I think it's better to wait before describing staff as loonies. It's an offensive term to some, by the way
I assume the mother told the press. If it's true, it's potty.
Well I think this is only a tiny percentage of the facts reported and I think her mother just wanted to get her pretty daughter in the papers. That's how I see it.
People like just jude love a rant even when they don't know all the facts.

My son used to be in the scouts, and one of the children in his group would have died if they came in contact with peanut oil. Even if it was only on someones finger tips.

Most chocolate bars are made in an environment were peanuts and other nuts are used, so having ANY chocolate bar could be fatal to another child with nut allergy.

So for that reason chocolate bars are banned, and the mother probably signed a letter to say she accepted that, but then probably forgot.

But if a child with nut allergy had died on the school trip you would have probably moaned that the children's bags were not searched to find any chocolate bars.

But never mind Just Jude you have a rant a the "stupid" teachers as you seem to know everything.
Stop with the allergies.
Everyones allergic to something, nowadays.
Trust me, if it was that dangerous the last government would have banned choccies.
The children and their parents would have been fully aware of the behaviour expected on the trip and wound have agreed to it. Sounds like this child and her two friends got caught and she decided to get lippy about it. On the one hand you have people bemoaning the lack of discipline in schools and then the 'human rights' brigade who think an 11 can do what she likes.
^^ That sounds about right. The other two were given a warning.

VHG, I know lots of things about everything, and a lot more than the press officer who failed to engage his brain before opening his mouth.

According to he/she, it's now ok to intercept and read private letters all in the cause of H&S. Prisoners have more rights than these kids!
They probably weren't 'private' letters (who writes a letter on holiday?), they will have been part of a busy-work exercise designed to keep the kids quiet, probably of an evening.

I always send a letter back to my mum when on holiday.
I can't see where it says the letter was intercepted and read in the caus eof H&S. Can you help me find it please J-J?
I can see why the guesthouse said no food in kids rooms...imagine the mess!

You only need to read between the lines.
Ah read things that are not there, gotcha!

Half a story so not really much to comment on.
Did you read between the lines when you read the Sun's reporting of Hillsborough, J_J
I think you are just winding us up now.
There may be fault on both sides but the story has too many holes in it to be taken seriously
I imagine the letter did form part of a group exercise. Perhaps the girl made the mistake of writing about the midnight feast. Having said that, you have to question why the other two were only disciplined.
