It seems rather sinister to me that private mail is intercepted and read by a third party. Does this happen for all 11 year olds mail? Was this girl singled out? What were the teachers hoping to find? It seems grossly over the top if it was to catch children eating sweets. I also believe banning an 11 year old from eating chocolate on holiday is extremely strict. If...

I think the 'no eating in your room' rule was Health and Safety. A child sharing a bar of 'Fruit and Nut' with a friend who has nut allergy could result in a dead child. Just one bite of a nut for someone with an allergy can trigger anaphylactic shock which will kill if not treated immediately. The school were just 'covering their backs' against being sued for damages.
... or children gorging food in their rooms at night and being sick, and being unable to take part in the next day's activities....
To clarify , again some on here have not read the post ,
It was NOT against the hotel rules it was against the schools ruling to the pupils nothing to do with the Hotel at all.
Some people on here have not read the paper's report properly. The parent was not asked to take the child home. She decided to do that herself.
I don't think they would last long if they kept printing lies.

Wasn't it the Sun that printed "Freddie Starr ate my hamster"?
JJ - "andy-hughes, what has eating a bar of chocolate got to do with H&S? Stop trying to defend all those clowns from the council downwards along with the teachers. The real kids in this farce were the teachers!"

Eating a bar of chocolate has to do with H & S for reasons exhaustively explained by others.

Schools can be, and are shut down instantly for serious breaches of H & S regulations, and Head Teachers can be dismissed - Mrs H is a Schools Inspector, and a previous Head, Deputy and Class Teacher who has given up her time to take children on trips.

Why not spare a thought for the teachers who do give up their time (and a few nights' sleep!) to take children on stay-away trips, for which they receive no additional pay or time off in lieu.

Bet you wouldn't do it!
it's this kind of nonsense that discourages teachers from taking school trips. Do anything a parent doesn't agree with and they're off moaning to the media.
She would have missed the trip to Robin Hill or The needles or wherever they were going, with the rest of the class. Thats why the mother drove 160 miles to collect plus £60 odd for the ferry.

If the child has stress issues and eating problems because of this it is, in my opinion, to a larger than average part the parents fault for making such a huge stupid fuss. Keeping her off school, contacting the media.... I bet there were plenty of choice words flowing for some time at home as well.

The child was disruptive and potentialy could have cost the school money with the chocolate in the room.

I would be happy to bet that, depending on the lenght of time left of the holiday, non of the teachers would have liked to sit in the hotel with her. They would have given her a good talking to, kept her back for one trip then she would have been allowed to attend. The teachers used scare tactics and they did the trick.

I have always remembered a Judge Judy episode where a singing coach wrote to a parent and basicly said I'm sorry there isn't anything I can do for xxx singing. She has a nice voice but won't in my opinion get much better so your wasting your money.

Mother was outraged and was demanding compensation for the stress and hurt the child felt.

Judge Judy said What? How can she be stressed and hurt? The letter was addressed to you so xxx shouldn't have seen it. The fuss you made of it by showing her the letter and bringing this law suit has done that.

No compensation.

This girls situation is slightly different as she was effectivly sent home but mothers outrage has contributed to the difficulties she is now having.
Couldn't agree more, cassa.
"Girl sent home for eating chocolate" I'm actually flabbergasted at why the sun thinks this is news.
I blame hungover reporters as surely there must've been something on this globe we call earth which was more interesting and shocking then a girl who got sent home for eating chocolate

Well the thread on here has had 90 responses so it's clearly the sort of story people like to discuss. I can see why the Sun chose to create this story
Well it is their job to plant "Anger" seeds for the public to peck i suppose.
It sells newspapers.
Yes thanks elliemay1 for graciously explaining that to me.
Remember, it's the lowest form of wit, Kramer.
Okay that was a bit silly of me and i'm sorry elliemay1.
That's ok Kramer, no hard feelings.
Cheers elliemay1 it was said as i would to my friends in a jokey sarky way but that's obviously not conveyed over the internet when you can't see the other persons face/bodylanguage
I understand, Kramer.
Regarding "Best Answer" it wasn't private mail. The child knew that it would be seen by teachers.
