// It's very carefully not racist... //

That's good then right?

// ..but it actually is in practice. //

No it isn't.
Yes I got that, that's obvious, but do you seriously think a ' new life' in Britain is ever going to be more 'disappointing' than going ' home' where there is no clean water and little food? It's aimed at people from Africa and Asia primarily, and they certainly won't be taking the government up on their kind offer. Since it does target this group, even in an unspoken way, although I wouldn't consider it overtly or obviously racist , it's certainly racism by stealth.

I disagree Ludwig, for the reasons I've stated.
It's nonsensical logic. It's like saying a law against physical assault is sexist because most people that commit assault are men.
Sharingan, //do you seriously think a ' new life' in Britain is ever going to be more 'disappointing' than going ' home' where there is no clean water and little food?//

You’re making some rather unqualified assumptions.
And you aren't?
No, I'm not.
don't think it was overtly anything, however doubt it will make a blind bit of difference.
Then that's something else we can disagree on Naomi ;-)
If someone is so poor they have no clean water and little food, how did they get here in the first place?
Sharingan, I don't know what you think you've read, but I've made no assumptions. I've simply said that a free ticket home might be welcome to some - and it might.
they are coming from all places, not just Africa, Asia. The ones currently camped out by Park Lane are Romanians, and there are plenty more of them dotted around the place.
some took up the offer of free flights, and some didn't, perhaps considering that if they wait long enough their entry to UK will become legit
Romanians can legally live in the UK Em.

I'm just linking to information about very poor immigrants Ummm and how they come to be here.
so why are they squatting in Hyde Park,
i have no way to verify this info, it was a little while back and in the local paper, but our borough has between 12-15 thousand asylum seekers, refugees, what make people think that the capital is the place to come to, and the streets are paved with gold, mostly what i see is beggars and down and outs. Those who come for a better life don't always get it.
People quick to jump on the racism bandwagon often miss the reality. A scheme like this could be a ‘Godsend’ to say, girls trafficked here by gangs for prostitution for example – or to anyone else who finds themselves in an unacceptable situation from which they have no means of escape – but who, because they are here illegally, are afraid to approach the authorities for help. For them, this could be a very viable way out.
I think with a bit of deliberate misunderstanding any statement can be declared racist by some people. There I've done it myself 'some people' must be a racist remark too.
if they have no money, no chance of a job, and nowhere to live what do we do with them
