its not discriminating against a particular race, so I wouldn't say it was racist but according to the ASA neither did the people complaining about it say so either,

A spokesman from the ASA said: “The general nature of the complaints is that complainants find it harmful and offensive for its potential to raise racial tensions and cause distress.”

No I wouldn't say it was overtly racist.

It does represent a rather oppressive and authoritarian image of the country though.

All it lacks is this on the other side

Apart from the right-on liberals (and illegal foreigners) I would think most people would agree with the poster.

And surely warning that you will face arrest if you stay illegally, and so giving a chance to leave peaceably without arrest, is good.

An authoritarian country would stomp in and arrest without warning Jake.

Where was there any mention of race, ethnicity
or religion on these posters?

Just a stunt IMO. I can't believe that many illegal immigrants would have such a good grasp of English that they would take any notice of a van driving by let alone understanding what it said.
I'd hazard a guess that no illegal immigrants have complained.
Many people speak English, even from poor nations around the world. Often, like the French, they just refuse to use it.

No an authoritarian country would stomp in and detain people without giving them the reasons for their detentian and detain them indefinately without trial

When you see we have people like this I think we should do more to make people "go home"

It's not racist but it's probably a waste of money. Is anyone seriously going to see one of these and think 'oh dear, I'd best go home then'. ?

It's about time someone was, perhaps then we wouldn't have so many of them sneaking into this country.

Perhaps when they find that the streets of Britain are not paved with gold, they will only be too willing to take the chance to be ferried home free of charge, without the risk of being caught and sentenced to imprisonment?
Two trucks at the cost of £10k lolloping around the east end hoping some foreign people catch a brief glimpse.

Still, if it helps some people sleep easy at night then its no bad thing I suppose. Do you not feel slightly hoodwinked by this gimmick?
I can't see that it is racist, as colour or creed isn't mentioned on the side of the van. Its not as if it says "Go home ***'s" in the same way as written on walls all over the country.

Whether its a valid and proper way to control illegal immigration, only time will tell. I suspect that it will largely be an empty gesture, done to assuage the ultra right wing of the Tory party, now that BNP-lite is snapping at its heels.
Racism doesn't come into it. This scheme is targeting people who have no right to be here. Compared to the estimated cost of £15,000 for forcibly removing one individual from this country, the £10,000 cost of the trucks pales into insignificance, so if the plan works the scheme makes good economic sense. From the point of view of an illegal immigrant for whom a new life in the UK has proven to be a great disappointment, a free ticket home with no strings attached is a very generous offer – and could be very welcome.
Agreed it isn't racist. However doubtful it'll have an impact. Smacks of desperation over a situation allowed to get out of control.
It's very carefully not racist, but it actually is in practice. Let's be really honest it's not targetted at blond haired blue eyed Norweigians is it? Do I want my government wasting money on this nonsense, no not really, it's as if someone has stuck a Millwall supporter in charge of PR. This however I could live with...

wonderful- the censors got the link...what a day, already :(
It's aimed at people who are here illegally.
How can it be racist?

If someone is here illegally, regardless of their colour, then they are here illegally. White people have been deported...

lol @ the Eff off back to Eton...

Probably because there aren't many blond haired blue-eyed Norwegians here illegally Sharingan.
Excellent post from Naomi.
