I am yet to fathom the mentality and mindset of cyclists, pedestrians and drivers who take their life into their hands at these crossings and I doubt I ever will.

Who would want to play Russian roulette with a train?
I also feel very sorry for the train drivers in these instances, it cannot be a pleasant experience.

Idiocy by the cyclist.

It's not only the train driver, but the passengers as well. No doubt some of them got 'dumped' on the floor when the train driver applied full braking.

The cyclist should be identified and held fully accountable.

There is a £2500 fine for dangerous cycling, but the police do not enforce it.

There is no education about using level crossings. There used to be public information films, but they no longer broadcast them. As there is no test needed before you can cycle on the roads this is the likely outcome.

There should be Government supported cycling education classes that anyone can go to and learn for a fee. If someone is caught cycling dangerously, they should be ordered to go on the class and get educated to stay safe. The same should happen to drivers.

I'm really not sure a class would be much help for her if great big barriers, flashing lights, and active train tracks were not enough to deter her from being an idiot.

Cyclists in Cambridgeshire have a very peculiar attitude. I can't count the number of times I've seen them rapidly overtaking cars which were turning corners (and I've seen several getting knocked over in the process), or going straight over pedestrian crossings at top speed on a red light.

I live near a very busy cycling area (hospital, university, major route into the city etc...), including a lead up to the busier bus route in Europe (apparently!). I see them all the time, no helmets or protective gear or reflectors, flowing skirts or scarves, MP3 players on, riding with no hands... Unsurprisingly it is renown for accidents, so many of them, I was with one guy who hit/was hit by a car a few months ago, called the ambulance etc... He was very lucky considering the impact (he flew!) and I couldn't see any helmet anywhere.

Even pedestrians though, I was on the same road yesterday going to the docs, stood waiting for a crossing to go green. A police 4x4 was screaming down the road, sirens and lights flashing and people were running across the road before it, including a man with young children, why can't people just wait???

Bad enough with normal traffic, suicidal with a train which can't just slam on the breaks to stop quickly or swerve like a car. Madness.

If the cyclist was wearing a helmet and listening to music through ear pieces as many I see are then he/she was probably unaware that a train was near.
I see them with helmet, ear phones and texting on a mobile phone all while cycling at the same time. You should try driving through 'CycleCity' Cambridge in the rush hour, it's one of the most frightening things you can do, many of the cyclists seem intent on suicide.

I really don't understand why cyclists think the Highway Code doesn't apply to them. Happens all the time, pedalling through red lights, all over the pavement, wrong way up one-way streets. Really gets on my wick. I hope they throw the book at this cyclist.

Yes, I too feel sorry for the train drivers who unavoidably hit them. Same problem for the selfish people who deliberately jump in front of them (usually during rush hour when I am trying to get home)

A neighbour's son was killed at night on an unguarded pedestrian track crossing

The train driver displayed enormous courage and morality.

With a history of depression it could have been judged suicide and no one would have been any the wiser. But the driver told the Inquest that he hadn't used his lights and horn in the way he should have done and described seeing a look of shock on the victim's face just before the impact

youngmafbog - if you see a suicide by someone jumping in front of a train in terms of inconvenience to you, it shows that you were behind the door when simple human empathy was being given out.

In Norfolk there were fatalities on crossings every year...people's impatience...cost lives !

There were also its of suicides at leavesden just outside Watford when I was in st Albans...very sad !
