I noticed the irony of an obviously foreign letting agent, discriminating against a black under-cover reporter. We don't seem to have come very far from the days when signs saying " No Black, No Dogs and No Irish" were common place in Britain.

Ultimately you are bound by the laws that protect people against racial discrimination, so it isn't your choice anyway. Well, it is: you can choose to remember that the actions of people have nothing to do with what they look like, and everything to do with who they are -- or you can choose to break the law.

Baz, is not for the agent to decide that all black men are bad tenants and all white ones must be. Nor is it for the landlord to adopt that approach for a whole group. He or she must apply the same standards and terms for everyone.
^ must be good^ not "must be" ^
If in their experience they are always having problems with blacks then they shouldnt have to rent to them

If they are in business then they will take money from anybody, but if its causing them problems and costing them time and money then they will think twice.

If they were to start getting problems from lets say Danes and they did the same would there be the same crying from people like mikey ? no of course there wouldnt and you know it.

I know plenty of people who let property and they all have their own preferences on who and who they wont let to...all based on past experience.

Their properties their rules, dont like it..tough.

If youre in business your in it to make money not lose it, if blacks have caused them to lose money one way or another then its their choice if they should or shouldnt let to them
Blatant, illegal racism.

Baz...it has been pointed out by FredPuli and myself that to discriminate against people because of their race or colour is against the law. Nobody has the right to disregard this law, and that means you as well as everybody else. You may choose to disregard what I say but FredPuli is a retired lawyer. Are you saying he is wrong as well ?

Ellipsis...bang on the nail as usual ! Not sure why some people on here can't understand that simple fact !
If I started have problems with 99 people who just happened to be Black all in a row, that still doesn't mean I have any reason, or right, to make deductions about the next black person who walks in. That is the point. It's discriminatory to act as if the colour of the person's skin matters. It doesn't.

Remember that it can work the other way round too -- do you think that you would be happy being denied a service because the provider had had "problems with White people"?
-- answer removed --
so if i keep having trouble with black tenants and decide no more , youre telling me who i can and cant rent to ?...yeah righ, good luck with that.

so if i decide not to have white tenants like some asians i know then youre ok with that presumably as it doesnt upset youre black guilt trip

I've seen roads that were predominantly white now predominantly black and theyre now rubbish tips for the most part, propertys are devalued etc etc so please dont tell me who i can and cant rent to

youre so damn naive its beyond belief
"Blatant, illegal racism."

oh get over yourself and stop looking for things to get offended by.

what, you really think asians like blacks as a rule and vice versa !?

"If I started have problems with 99 people who just happened to be Black all in a row, that still doesn't mean I have any reason, or right, to make deductions about the next black person who walks in. That is the point. It's discriminatory to act as if the colour of the person's skin matters. It doesn't.
"
so you rent to the 100th black and get taken for a mug again....nice work

you have every and any amount of reasons to make whatever deductions you like about anybody, whether they are right or wrong is another matter and as far as I'm concerned irelevant.

Its up to you to do what suits you, I'm not telling you what to do, so i dont expect you or others to tell me what to do based on your ideals.

you can try but you wont get anywhere, i do whats right for and suits me
//so if i decide not to have white tenants like some asians i know then youre ok with that presumably as it doesnt upset youre black guilt trip //

//Upset youre black guilt trip // ?

I dont know who that was directed at , however i dont think anyone on here is on such a trip .
We are simply stating that the practice is illegal and wrong

If some asians are discriminating against white people or any other groups , then clearly that is also wrong and against the law ; and should equally not be tolerated .

Seems simple to me .

bazwilrun - your language says everything about your attitude - "...so you rent to the 100th black ...".

Not black man, or black woman - just 'black' because, after all they are all the same aren't they, man, woman, child, if they are 'black' they conform to a social and behavioural type, which you don't like.

What a good job we whites are not such a basic stereotype - otherwise there would be a danger that I would be a racist biggot like you - how horrible would that be?
well said andy
"If I started have problems with 99 people who just happened to be Black "

I dont see any black man or black woman mentioned in that Andy, just the word black which is exactly what I used...got your selective cap on today have we !?

Bazwillrun - "If I started have problems with 99 people who just happened to be Black ..."

That's not your quote - it's jim360's which you have picked up.

Now who has their selective cap on?
Could a landlord legally specify, 'NO DHSS', when advertising a property to rent?
mikey4444

That report is surprising, because you have to be a certain kind of stupid have a blanket prejudice against all 'Afro-Carribeans'.

How could that even work? You would have to include Jamaicans, Nigerians, Black American, Black Britons...that's an awfully big demographic.

I would've thought that running background checks (through Experian), plus a couple of verified references would be all a prospective landlord would need.
sandyRoe

Yes, I believe so. There's no law against that.
sp1814 - "How could that even work? You would have to include Jamaicans, Nigerians, Black American, Black Britons...that's an awfully big demographic."

It's nice and simple - "See black - knock-back!"

There you go baz - you like things nice and simple don't you - reducing entire races and cultures to one single negative stereotype.#

You can memorise that, it will save you having to do anything more complicated when sizing up prospective tenents.
