Does This Mean Guilt??

Does this mean he is guilty?
Or does it mean that despite his innosence, he doesnt want to drag his family through the trial and face wrongful imprisonment?

I know what I think!

It means we'll probably never know, and does it now matter anyway? If he were guilty he'll never face justice -- and if he weren't, then a man has felt driven to a tragic end. Neither outcome is particularly brilliant.
I agree with jim - there are no winners here.
tough on his very old and sick mother, who depended on him.

As he'd been jailed for similar offences before, it's not easy to conclude that either of the alternatives you suggest is right.
