I can't really make my mind up on this one. If 10,000's of 15 years olds are having sex and we can't seem to stop them, perhaps it shouldn't be a crime. But what of the 14 years olds ? Will there be a campaign in another few years to make that the age of consent ?

Sqad...after I posted I realised that you are not happy with the current situation, which perhaps isn't clear in my latest post...apologies if I suggested otherwise.
Sqad - girls of 14 - 15 are not charged because they usually have sex with boys their own age, who also don't get charged.

If she was having sex with a much older man, even if consensual, it could be viewed that she was manipulated or coerced.
mikey........LOL......it would seem that way.

It would seem that legal action is only taken in the 13, 14 15 group i if you are famous in the media and in your 70's and 80.s
ummmm....yes, i understand.
it would be quite acceptable for an adult of say 40, to have sex with a 15 year old girl

As acceptable as it is now for an adult of 40 to have sex with a 16 year old girl; which may look bizarre, but if the girl is mature enough emotionally to consent, I can't see why not.

As for the various DJs in question - they were just ahead of their time, for which you don't normally get cleared retrospectively but may in time get an apology, perhaps along the lines of Alan Turing.
jno...LOL
At the end of the day human beings will do what human beings do.
Law or no law.
yes shoota, you are right.

##Should We Lower The Age Of Consent To 15?##

I cant see how it will make any difference, kids will still have sex whether its against the law or not!
I can foresee where this is going, lower the age of consent, then the age of marriage, so conveniently fitting in with other cultures in this country.
I think that there need to be almost two ages of consent - one to protect young people from older people, and another relating to young people sleeping with one another. I don't think that the age of consent stops any two young people having sex if that is what they wanted to do but that is very different to where there is a significant age difference.

But almost regardless of what the age of consent is we need to find better ways to make young people more aware of the responsibilities and potential repercussions of having sex - or at least breaking through the it will never happen to me attitude and maybe accepting that young people will have sex with one another will make everyone be more open and honest about it.
LOL...AOG....Really? Blame the Muslims!!!

Just as long as they realise that if they do break the law then they must also be prepared to accept the consequences of doing so.

But hardly anyone gets charged OAG, so whats the point in having a law to say you cant have sex till you are 16?

It will be the same if it were changed to 15!
trt

My answer was in reply to shoota's post, who appeared to be talking generally and not specifically about under aged sex.

As a grandfather of two children within that category,I vehemently disagree
with any further lowering of the age of consent.
leap of imagination there, aog. At the moment it is proposed we emulate the saucy French, not the saucy Saudis.
This was also in the news:

Age of consent should be 13, says barrister. Ms Hewson calls Hall's crimes "misdemeanours" and warns against "fetishising victimhood"

A prominent barrister specialising in reproductive rights has called for the age of consent to be lowered to 13.

Barbara Hewson told online magazine Spiked that the move was necessary in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal to end the "persecution of old men".

She also said that complainants should no longer receive anonymity.

The NSPCC called her views "outdated and simply ill-informed" and said to hear them "from a highly experienced barrister simply beggars belief".

Her remarks come after a number of high-profile arrests over allegations of historical sexual offences in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal.

Among those to have been convicted is former BBC broadcaster Stuart Hall, who admitted 14 charges of indecently assaulting girls, including one aged nine, between 1967 and 1985. Ms Hewson described Hall's crimes as "low-level misdemeanours" which "ordinarily... would not be prosecuted".

I, too, think her comments are unbelievably crass.

The whole point of the age of consent is to prevent very young girls from being forced into prostitution.
The law is scarcely concerned with consenting 15-year-olds, but if a 14-year-old or 15-year-old girl thinks she is not ready to get horizontal with a pushy boy, she has the perfect get-out.
no, or the next genre of granparents will be 30y old :(
