to our so called leaders...of any party
when you give billions away overseas to all and sundry, circa £57million to the eussr 365/7, remember every one of these Brits and what your duty is to this country

I hope it sticks in their collective throats and they choke on those numbers , probaly dont even care, just tell them to put on a jumper no doubt

That's a completely misleading report, as it suggests that people died directly from cold weather. The reality is that the cold weather helped two particularly virulent strains of flu to spread rapidly throughout the country, resulting in an increased number of deaths during the winter period.

If the Evening Standard had bothered to interview someone from the Office of National Statistics (as BBC News did), rather than just relying on their bare figures, they would have known that.

but every year people die as a direct result of temp over a certain level
there are X amount of deaths per deg c above certain levels and for every deg the temp drops after a certian point the death rates increase, its the same all over europe

cold and heat always affect the elderly, always have and always will, you can dispute the exact figures all you like but you cant dispute the seasonal increase in death rates or is it just coincidence then, all over europe
It is a fact that more elderly people die in the winter than the summer. That has always been the case. An elderly person who catches the flu can die from complications even if they live in a very warm home.

I have seen no evidence that the 'extra deaths' can be directly linked to cold homes.
Whatever happens to our elderly citizens, all governments will give billions away to help their world "cred" it won't ever change unfortunately.
//In a slither of good news the number of winter deaths in London fell slightly from 2,700 to 2,800.//. Huh???

It's a confusing report, because the headline is suggesting 31,000 deaths due to cold weather. Then, further down, it says it's increased by a third from last year, and a third of 'those' due to cold weather.

You get more deaths in Residential homes at this time of year and they are warm. So i am sceptical. It doesn't give numbers of how many died of hypothermia, at all?
baz they dont care about ordinary people, they wont be telling their kids santa wont be coming. They wont have to choose being warm or having a meal they'll be in their warm homes laughing on the bak of those less fortunate which is actually a high percentage of British people.
Cold weather is sponsored by the Coop Funeral Service - given what's happening over there with the management, the incinerators will be stoked up this winter.
Last Winter was the coldest for 50 years. A rise was inevitable. The colder it is, the more vunerable people will die.
The energy companies raising bills above inflation does not help. The Government could do more about that and the lack of real competition but won't. But even if fuel was more affordable, old people would still die in large numbers due to the cold weather. Unfortunately, it is one of the results of aging.
