he won't be any different to many politicians and non politicians, he is towing the party line. What would you rather he say, that he hated him and glad that he is dead.
Why a hypocrite though?

He's a politician, what do you expect him to do?
Question Author
Dunnitall - as I said in a previous post:

"When David Cameron latches on to the Mandela bandwagon, remember that in 1985 he was a top member of the Federation of Conservative Students
who produced the “Hang Mandela” posters. In 1989 Cameron worked for the Tory Policy Unit at Central Office and went on an anti-sanctions fact finding mission to South Africa with pro Apartheid lobby firm that was sponsored by Botha. Remember this when he tells the world that he was inspired by Madiba.

The poster in question in question has Nelson’s photo with the legend “Hang Nelson Mandela and all ANC terrorists; they are butchers.”
If Nelson Mandela can smile and hold Cameron's hand, as he did, there is no need for you to take umbrage on Mandela's behalf.
so you don't think that other politicians of whatever party might have held similar views. How can it be hypocritical, there are loads of people i am sure who didn't like, care for Mandela, but at this time of his death it's hardly likely they are going to gloat. Well some might but it's unlikely at the moment.
Thanks Maggie you learn something everyday on here. A friend once said to me years ago he had no time for Mandela as he was a terrorist.

maggie, don't you think that a person's attitude and beliefs can change over 25 years, especially having the met the man?

Cameron and many others who shared those views in the 80s may now realise and accept they were wrong.
hc...that is exactly what I was saying on facebook last night.

Do you hold the same views that you did 25 years ago, Maggie?
Any excuse eh maggie ?
Wonderful photo here.

In the 80s many people in the UK, Europe and the US believed Nelson Mandela was a terrorist and his name was only removed from the US terrorist list 5 years ago.
Seen chronicled elsewhere . . .

In 1985 Cameron was just about to start university and although he studied politics he never did become active in student politics – so was not a “top member” of FCS, nor involved in printing the slogan.

its obviously not a good story, just an old one.
It's sad to use the death of such a great man as an excuse to kick Cameron.
Hate Cameron?

I hate Downton Abbey far more!
well, Cameron's entered the matter by praising Mandela, hc4361. He could hardly do anything other than praise him, but he might apologise for the apartheid-backed lobby trip. If he's changed his mind (as is more than likely), he could always say so.

There's no evidence of him having anything to do with the posters, though.
wonder if you would ask the same of any politician, including Ed Miliband, as we know politicians like many people change their minds, view points, age, experience does that usually. Not everyone of course, some never change their minds on anything, strange.
Hate, a terrible word.

There are many things I dislike, but I hate nobody or anything, well, with the exception of rice pudding!
