I have taught many Eastern Europeans English. A word of advice to new ones from the experience of people who are here. It is not just the wages that are high here, the costs are too! Rents, heating, food are a lot more expensive than at home. You will be offered the basic wage, so the only way to live is to crowd into cheap accommodation. It comes a a shock.
I taught some Poles who had 21 people sharing a 3 storey house with no living room (turned into two bedrooms), one kitchen and one bathroom! They were thrilled when the landlord was ordered to put a bathroom on each floor.
They worked two and here jobs a day and had another job for their day off. They were all hoping to make enough money to start up businesses back home. Most went home disillusioned with just a little money.

We do have a problem with housing already. Maybe we'll go the way of most of Europe and renting will become more prevalent than buying. I think the majority of young adults here have already been priced out of buying.
21 to a house eh - our politicians are taking us back to the Victorian age.
why do they not understand this before coming, that our streets are not paved with gold, that it's costly, especially in the cities, that food, clothing, rents are high, i don't get why they don't know this.
It's all relative- higher wages, higher costs. But if they are only told the positives and then told there's a generous benefit system if necessary, it must seem as though you can't lose.
But a Romanian beggar on the streets of London can make far more money begging than they would living and working in Romania.

And if they live 21 to a house, and pay no tax, and get free health care then you can understand why they come here.

I wonder how many of these politicians who are so happy with the EU would leave their front door open and allow anyone to come and live in their house.

None of course, which makes this "no borders" situation, with no limit on numbers coming in, so stupid.

The sooner the EU implodes on itself the better as far as I am concerned.
I'm not sure who this post is aimed as I'm pretty sure that not many Eastern Europeans, even those already in this country, will read it.
Nor me, spudqueen - they'll have more urgent things to do than signing up to AB - but what carole says is true.

And pay no income tax.

What rubbish. That might apply to some Roma people, but what sort of idea do you have of Romanians? That they all want to come here to beg?
I checked the population densities per square mile of various countries with Google the other day and found it very interesting and disturbing regarding further immigration.
UK = 650, GERMANY = 609, FRANCE = 289, SPAIN = 210, ROMANIA = 251, POLAND = 328, IRELAND = 153, ITALY = 512, SWEDEN = 57, CANADA = 9, MALTA = 3,229 AND BANGLADESH = 51,703

Employers are encouraging them here with what appears to be good wages, but they don't tell them about the cost of living! They end up working all hours just to make ends meet.
Wak,

Are those figures for UK or just England?

I reservemy horror until yo can clarify.
Just looked up the table for population density per square mile and am horrified that we are placed 51st.

Will they though - who is going to continue to give to beggers if their numbers increase to the levels speculated at
I think most Romanians will come here to improve their standard of living, they can work the same as we do and pay their bills and live in houses or flats the same as we do, they arent all out to screw us!
Gobralta is at the mouth of the Meditteranean Sea:-)
Gromit, the figure (650 per sq mile) is for the UK.
Gibralta population is 12,056 per s.m . Total area is 2 sq.miles.
