maybe its the old army tactic; if you have a trouble-maker - promote him. Gives them sense of responsibility and purpose.
Given that nominations are supposed to be kept secret, not really easy to verify this story. Also an early nomination can come from any source sanctioned by the committee so it's not exactly a given that Putin has received a lot of support -- merely that one person from the list in the link below nominated Putin:

Since the list includes "Members of national assemblies and governments of states"... maybe someone in the Russian government nominated him?

If he makes the shortlist, then you have a story.

He has horns then, but no bell..... (groan - i'll get me coat)
Whaaat!?
As Jim says nominations can come from anywhere. Putin's been nominated before and not got beyond the first qualifying round.

Meanwhile in a further surreal twist, Russian thugs in Crimea have been seen buying up andlooting Ukrainian military uniforms in preparation, it;s thought for a sham display of "loyalty to the Crimean Government" by supposed Ukrainian soldiers.
What with his continued denial that there are any Russian forces in Crimea I think the Nobel Prize for fiction would be more appropriate
The nomination seems to have happened five months ago...

..by a Russian based group called “International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation”

As Jim says, let's wait for the shortlist.

Beat me to the Independent link, sorry.
No problem AOG - I particularly liked the bit at the end..
"Vladimir Putin did not influence the nomination and according to Kobzon 'being a modest person', will refuse to comment on it"
Would a modest man allow himself to be pictured like this- and what's more, allow such images to be plastered everywhere? ;)

Oh dear hold the headlines 'SEMINUDE PORTRAITS OF RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN'

Absolutely disgusting, they should be banned along with page three girls.

One has to agree they are a little different to the semi-nude pictures of our MP on holiday that were printed in most newspapers.
