This woman is evil. She microwaved a kitten for 5 minutes because she thought that it had attacked another pet.

She is young and could, theoretically, go on to have children of her own to care for. I hope that she does a better job of it than her caring for a kitten.

I can't get my head around it either.

It said in earlier articles that she was mentally ill. That is no excuse for behaving in such a way.

Doc ~ your link takes me to the wrong place.
She wouldn't serve the full 14 weeks either. This is the sort of person I would probably end up in jail for. Wouldn't be able to resist thumping her one !

wolf63 - "It said in earlier articles that she was mentally ill. That is no excuse for behaving in such a way."

It's not an excuse, but it is a reason, which is not the same thing.

This woman may be subject to periodic bouts of psychosis, when her behaviour is dicated by a temporary absence of the ability to judge right from wrong.

I would not wish to diminish the suffering of the poor kiten, but let's not be quite so quick to assume that this woman is simply a heartless sadist, there is clearly more to this than the initial report advises.

ummmm - "I just can't comprehend it."

Of course not, it is beyond rational comprehension - whcih underlines my point that this was not rational behaviour.
I have every sympathy for people with mental health issues - but some actions are just so far removed from civilised behaviour that no amount of 'making allowances' will excuse them.

This was a barbaric act, carried out on a defenceless creature - I just can't accept the playing of the mental health defence as a "get out of jail free card".

Nor does "what good does prison do for women" cut much ice with me - the sentence is a punishment - it needed to be significantly longer.
I blame computer games etc.so much violence in some of them...plus the media shows far too much of it as well...world has gone mad!!!!
"Failure of medical services"?? What about family responsibility?.... They were aware of her problems and shouldn't have let her be "caring" for pets.
I blame the fact that she was a woman with mental problems who had a tragic and terrible moment of madness. I feel so sorry for the poor kitten of course. Perhaps the light sentence is due in part to her letting the kitten out after a minute having "realised what she had done". I don't know if I can accept that, it's sickening and tragic, but from a legal perspective people who plead guilty or who recognise their crimes do tend to get lighter sentences than those who don't.

Computer games have nothing to do with it.
Do they microwave kittens on computer games?
Maybe not,and maybe computer games has nothing to do with this particular incident but one hears so much about brutality caused by children these days...what has happened to the innocence of a child???
Not totally to blame in this case....if at all....but Kloofnek does have a very good point.
Were children ever really innocent? We're not about to do the whole "it was so much better in the old days" thing, are we ?

No, they weren't ever innocent.

If I got up to what my mum and her siblings did I would have ended up in a youth offenders...
Did I say that, Jim?.......But I do know from experience that children can be harmed by what they view and the "games" they play.
Cross-posted, aimed at kloofnek rather than you gness.
