Remember The Flood Of Bulgarians And Romanians...
...that were predicted to be swamping our streets from January 1st onwards?
Not being funny...but where the hell are they? And why have the press gone all quiet on the story?
Does anyone feel concerned that we are now living in an age where papers can print wholly false stories, without checks and balances?
Is this an unforeseen product of the Internet age? With so much unverified information flooding our phones, tablets, PCs and other devices, do we just take everything with a pinch of salt now?

For one thing, the fact that Romania had/has higher levels of growth than we do, and that numerous polls and attempts to actually ask Romanians indicated that most of them weren't interested in coming to the UK.
The epitome of this was Nigel Farage's mission to Romania, where he was told numerous times by students and also some of the country's most impoverished citizens that they did not want to leave. The one conversation he had with a priest, who suggested that criminals might leave the country, was subsequently quoted all the time in all his subsequent public appearances. All the others were ignored.

The problem is, AOG, that this gets said about *every* influx of foreigners to the UK. It's always "too many" for somebody or another, and it's happened so often that people stop listening when the papers cry wolf.
As for those figures - I'd be interested to know if the 1 million figure applied to the number of East Europeans in the UK at any one time. That number has come over since the expansion, but we also know there's a relatively high turnover of people who come, work for a short time, then leave.

Seems like even Labour's Mr Vaz was misinformed, when he turned up at Heathrow to welcome them all to our country.

"as far as I can see mikey and naomi are mirror images: he is totally in favour, she is totally anti and has often said she will never never vote for them again. Any accusations of obsession must apply equally to both - and they add nothing whatever to the debate except name-calling. "
Naomi, did you really once vote for the marxists? what happpenned?

/// Keith Vaz is not a minister. He is not even part of the Coalition. ///
Sorry my mistake, he was of course a minister under the last Labour government, and at the moment he is the MP for Leicester East, and also chairman of the home affairs committee, amongst a number of other positions, one wonders how he found time to greet a couple of migrants at the airport.

In reply to your 12:28 question, tt's got to a point now where I cross-reference any story I read. Normally two newspapers with opposing political points of view together with the BBC and/or Sky will do it.
And even then...if all sources have got the story from the Press Association, the facts may be flawed/skewed.

I think we have a lot to thank Nige for. His "mission to Romania" probably scared them off.
This was always going to be a non-event. At one point some allegedly responsible people were predicting that about a quarter to a half of the entire working population of Romania was going to come to Britain.
Oddly, the same fuss was never made when Croatia joined the EU in the middle of last year, despite the fact that that country is nearer, albeit less populous.
I'm waiting for the big story in the Daily Mail
"Millions don't flock to Britain"

Eddie, so the Editor earns a lot, so do many in the Public Sector, proof in the pudding, how many pen pushers in the NHS get made redundant, or retire, taking a nice little earner, and promptly sign on the dotted line for another incredibly well paid job in the same organisation, just someplace else - NHS a massive organisation that doesn't work. Same as local councils, how many of the councillors were out in Cannes was it recently, 200 odd promoting what exactly, all paid for by the taxpayer, a nice jolly outing to quaff champers, it's a *** scam and a scandal.
