'..At least 66,000 girls and women in the UK are believed to be victims of FGM...' Good grief. Awful, just awful. How could anyone do that to someone

Can only echo that earlier comments.
I can't even understand how a culture can consider this sort of mutilation in the first place. Have they no empathy with those on whom they inflict it ? No compassion ? What the heck is the aim save to inflict torture and disfigurement and probable mental issues on the victim ?
What century/millennium are we living in anyway ?

i do not understand this at all, mutilate your child in the name of your culture, religion, what, so that she can have pain for the rest of her life, i would like to see prosecutions for those who do it, and the parents who make their child go through it, perhaps the message might get across, because it doesn't seem to be happening
I am heartily sick of reading about this dreadful situation, what is the matter with our government are they completely spineless ? It's high time that those who practice this were told in no uncertain terms that we will not tolerate this in this country & that when caught prosecution will follow & they will face severe penalties for assault & causing grievous bodily harm, there are no other ways of looking at it. Get it bloody sorted.

I would imagine that it is a very secretive practice here in the UK and perhaps the victims are too ashamed or scared to name the person/ people who did it to the police. I remember seeing a documentary programme about fgm quite a few years ago and it is just horrific. The screams are still ringing in my ears, and of course as it was in another country so the reporters could do nothing but watch and film what was happening.
Just shocking that it still goes on

The answer to your question is very easy emmie. Parents have been brainwashed by religion and tradition. Mothers especially are unlikely to put up much of a fight in these traditional backward and uneducated households, as they are themselves are seen as second class citizens.
Education will help and now that we are talking about the problem, perhaps health professionals, Teachers, etc will be more aware of the situation. Its already an offence in Britain, but we must ensure that the law is upheld.
Many of these little girls would have been seen in Hospitals and Doctors surgeries during their childhood. Why have the medical staff not contacted the Police and Social Services when they see evidence of FGM ?
Perhaps this topic was a no-go area in the past but it isn't now, so those in authority need to get off their bottoms and start doing something !
