Perhaps they should feel some sadness for all the boys that Smith is said to have abused instead . Being abused my Smith must be akin to being run over by a large flabby steamroller I should imagine. And why, if the CPS say that he should have been charged with sex crimes 40 years ago, did they, or their predecessors not act ?

This one is even worse than Jimmy Saville isn't it. I don't remember M15 being involved in that one. honestly, if the establishment are prepared to sweep Cyril's crimes under the carpet they'll do absolutely anything if it suits them.

I'd guess he got away with it because his victims were lads from broken homes, in care maybe, and he was a big man in every way.
Hopefully it couldn't happen again.
Cyril's family should have locked him up in a cellar. I can't think of anything more disgusting than that fat lump of lard with small boys. Nor do I understand that all these cases were covered up. No-one should be above the law.
What I read yesterday online about one child recollection of Cyril Smith was terrible. So sad for all the children who have been abused by people who were known to the police but protected.
so we've got more unsubstantiated allegations against a dead man? There doesn't seem to be anything in that article that is any kind of proof?

The CPS aren't very reliable though . . . .
Granted, it's not "proved". So here's a man, like Jimmy Savile, who did sterling work for the community and charity and now he's being traduced
Mr Smith's preferences were an open secret in journalistic circles. Like Jimmy Savile he seems to have enjoyed the protection of powerful people who weren't too troubled at the thought of ill-shod waifs being interfered with.

I'd feel happier though if revulsion was focused on his actions. His physique while striking should not enter into it. Kind of makes a culture of hate-speak. IMO.
Woofgang, the piece I read did not sound like an invention. It was a scared child being assaulted by a 29 stone monster. He went there that day. The child was there that day. That much is not disputed. What happened - well Cyril Smith is now dead, but that does not mean we should ignore what is said - and what at the time was covered up.
I agree with woof. I was surprised to see BBC news describing Jimmy Saville as a paedophile, without a trial (not even "alleged". I didn't know that was allowed.

The Westminster village must be an absolute den of those trying to and succeeding in fiddling their expenses and also abusing their position,if that's not an unfortunate phrase,in more sordid pursuits.Although people fought and died in two world wars to protect the right to vote I,at the moment, feel disinclined to use my right at the forthcoming elections.
His actions were deplorable in anyones language and he was an odious fellow whichever way you looked at him. Or would you be happier with a politically correct reference to his girth, considering that the poor boys were subjected to four times as much flesh than JS? Horrific is not the word.

Pixie, it seems in some cases there has been a cover up at the time and people who have come forward have been prevented from complaining before.
I dont think this means that once someone has managed to get away with it in their life time we should ignore those who were abused.
Allegedly. Potential victims of course should be looked after. But the accusations will never be proven, so it seems wrong to just assume guilt anyway.
MI5 and Special Branch buried Smith's crimes. A police file which accused him of sordid and indecent episodes with young boys. It was handed to prosecutors but then hidden and locked away for four decades.

Disgusting that no action was taken while there was apparently some evidence.
It is a sad situation that people were never made to face up to their actions during their lifetime, but we can never get away from the fact that it appears that people have been protected.
Exactly, sirprize.
