From what I have gleaned from the story, the headmaster made a mistake.

He offered a full apology, has initiated a review of the leave process and is meeting with the parents.

Step back for a minute and think about it...wouldn't terminating his employment be an overreaction?

No he is prob getting it in the neck from educational chiefs and made a genuine mistake .should this story have been in the press ?.The family of the deceased were right to go to the funeral of their love one also .what would it benefit any one to sack the headmaster .

The girl went to the funeral, the headmaster has apologised and there will be no fine.

Not sure why this is in a national newspaper, or why there needs to be a question about the headmasters future employment. Slow news day perhaps.

It does not demonstrate he has no judgement. He missed the piece of paper which should have influenced his judgement.

The report says they were unable to contact the school the day they received the letter because it was shut. So they can close the school during term time but a child is fined if they miss a day. This whole absence thing needs looking at.

No, for starters I bet it was one of his staff who dealt with the form anyway, he is just ultimately responsible. I lose all respect for whinging parents who take their non story to the papers and get their photos taken.

Because of the change to the rules about school time holidays there are loads of these sorts of stories doing the rounds. It was a mistake and he's apologised. What gets on my nerves is how these stories keep making it into the papers - families are grieving but still have the time to get their faces plastered all over the newspaper.

The parents were a bit daft- giving a weeks notice, but not bothering to follow it up. They knew it was the day after the school was closed. Wouldn't you want an answer before that?
