just watching "burning desires" on BBC2 - following the sucess of plain packaging in Australia do you think UK and the wider EU will now follow suit? Is this the next phase after the public places ban? It seems Ireland are going ahead and Scotland plan to follow. How long before will kill off the evil tobacco industry?

Hi ToraToraTora
Don't know where you get your info from, (but love the big smiley face).
Plain packaging has made no difference here, maybe our government "bullshirts" as much as any other :-)
Oooo there's a gap in the market there hc!

Plastic cig cases that look like real packets when (if) this plain packaging comes into effect.
according to the 'smokefreeblahblah'.
I don't believe you're dim enough to believe everything you read, like the Guardian readers, lol.

just think about it, what are the true costs, go on use that lonely brain cell.
Hi TTT, "old mate" (said in the nicest manner possible).
You seem to have based your post on "The success in Australia", regarding plain packaging.
"What a crock"
What success are you talking about?
It hasn't made any difference here what so ever apart from making shopkeepers life more difficult.
Once again "where does your info come from"

the bbc documentry I mentioned in the title. You sem to have more info then 1ozzy
If branding on packaging doesn't make any difference, we've wasted a lot of money and effort on consumer product branding over the past few hundred years.

and if it doesn't make any difference, why are the tobacco companies so keen to retain their branding?

Perhaps Adidas or BMW would be happy to lose theirs. I don't think so.

Because it's a fundamental element in successful consumer marketing.
Zeuhl > and if it doesn't make any difference, why are the tobacco companies so keen to retain their branding? <

don't need to be a genius to understand that golden virginia have just changed their packets to stop the snide gear being sold on the streets
with their brand name

imagine how easy it will be for the fake stuff to be sold if in plain packets

Banning all advertising hasn't stopped kids taking up the habit.
/imagine how easy it will be for the fake stuff to be sold if in plain packets /

that's true DrF

They will have to rely on their product offering a distinctive and superior user experience

either way it weakens any assurance a consumer might have about what they are buying - over or under the counter!

/Banning all advertising hasn't stopped kids taking up the habit./

you're right ummm

peer influence has always been much stronger

that's why package branding is considered such an important element to the tobacco companies

Kids ill still be drawn in whatever is done, but making the whole activity as naff as possible can only help
True...
crap packaging = cheap ciggie but harsh smoke
nice shiny packing = expensive but smoother smoke

that's how i always saw it, its why i never smoked lambert and scutlers

thankfully i've managed to quit
LOL

just thinking about it, and I'm starting to feel nostalgic for my Marlboro Reds packet

and i haven't smoked for years!
hc4361...Smoking cigarettes gives you bad breath, smelly clothes, yellow teeth, yellow net curtains, and also gives you life threatening illnesses, with lung cancer one of the main options....and this is "cool" ?

It also costs a small fortune every day. I understand from addicted friends of mine that the average price is about £7.50. If a smoker buys 40 a day, the total monthly spend will be an eye-watering £227.50 !
your post doesn't add up, mikey.
mikey hence why most buy duty free and a plain packet will not help that
