just watching "burning desires" on BBC2 - following the sucess of plain packaging in Australia do you think UK and the wider EU will now follow suit? Is this the next phase after the public places ban? It seems Ireland are going ahead and Scotland plan to follow. How long before will kill off the evil tobacco industry?

My cigarettes cost me about £350 a month............I wish they'd increase my pension as I obviously don't have enough left for food.

20 a day was what I meant to say. But, come to think of it, most seasoned and addicted older smokers will probably be on 40 a day, so that works out as £455 a month....I don't spend that much on my mortgage !

If plain packaging discourages anyone starting or makes anyone stop - then it can only be a good thing. Personally I doubt it will.

I have only ever once been seduced by Cig packaging, fond memories of my Sobranie Cocktails in all their glory - out of my price range now.

I make my own on a machine these days and have a few nice cases to carry them in.

With the greatest of respect ummmm, ( and others ) have you tried to quit. I smoked from about aged 15 until 1978, when I was 25, as most working class boys did. But back them there was nothing in the way of help to quit. Now there are patches, gum, etc. I am not saying it is easy to stop smoking, because it is an addiction just like other addictions, but it has to worth a go surely ?

I am not preaching, just trying to help.

I have found this on the 'net this afternoon. I was trying to find out what a packet of Green Silk Cut cost in 1978, but I can't seem to find out for sure.

I have tried a few times. I have duty frees here bought back from my holiday so will make another attempt when they are finished.

My partner stopped quite easily.

But if you were serious about wanting to quit and stop wasting this eye-watering amount of money every day ummmm, perhaps you should put the rest of the duty-free into the dustbin right away, not forgetting to pour a good load of bleach onto of them. Sometimes tomorrow never comes you know !

when i was smoking my mate used to bring me back ciggies from cyrpus, so although i decide to quit in dec last year, i didn't actually quit until i used the stash of ciggies he had brought back for me

No, my mortgage is very small :-)

I've only got the duty frees left so have to give up then. It doesn't just save money from the cost of fags. When I go to the shop to buy them I end up buying other stuff that I don't actually need. So, financially I think I'd notice a massive difference.

And, Svejk, you're right, I wouldn't feel ashamed either way. My mortgage is paid, my bills are paid, the kids are provided for...so unless I didn't provide one of those I have no reason to be ashamed.
