I am planning a round the world trip, but not sure where to go. Australia and Thailand are my obvious choices, but where next? Also is it best to by a 'book of flight tickets' before i go, or should i do it as i go along? I'm planning to go for a year. Oh, how much can i expect this whole trip to cost per person? would rooms be charged per room or per person? Any tips and recommendations are most welcome! Thank you!!

You have to travel in one constant direction and the number of stops is usually limited [but not the time spent there]. A typical itinerary might be London>Singapore>Hong Kong>Sydney>Auckland>Hawaii>Los Angeles>New York>London. It's a while since I worked in travel but I would guess around 900 for your ticket nowadays. You can visit airline sites and get a quote.
Hotels do tend to be charged per room. You can book in advance or buy vouchers and ring when you arrive locally to choose a particular accommodation of the grade purchased. That's good value in Oz. I'd allow at least the equivalent of 40 per room per night for roughly three star accommodation.
