They obviously thought it'd be too dangerous for him to go, which is a bit strange if you think about it.
I loved this story, you can't keep a good man down! If when it was found out he'd left it too late for him to go with an organised group, who decided he wouldn't be able to go on his own? He sure showed them!
So glad he went and returned safely. So many youngsters give up at the first hurdle.
