Striking Teachers

Parents are fined if they take their kids out of school for holidays in term-time, yet teachers can strike when they feel like it without fear of repercussions.

Parents are inconvenienced enough times having to arrange extra childcare for the countless 'teacher training/inset' days during the school year

Parents get fined for taking kids out of school, yet no penalties for teachers when they strike and don't turn up at school at the first sign of snow

All members of staff are expected to attend their nearest school if weather prevents them from reaching their normal place of work.

Wondered when you'd start moaning about this. Inset days were taken off teachers' holidays so they have lost five days of their holidays. I see no mention about any effect on the kids education (which is negligible) but it's all about the inconvenience to you.

Do they not lose pay?
Also, I don't think you can just "strike when you feel like it"

I think there is a minority who see school as a baby sitting service rather than a place of education...and as Ich says...where do you get this strike when they feel like it from?

That's exactly what I think about taking them out of school during term time. Other than exam time I don't see what the fuss is.

I agree Roy, we have taken them out of school for holidays although this year we had to show 'exceptional circumstances' or get fined.

Hmmmm.. I can see both sides. Out of interest, i might ring the school Friday and tell them the children are on strike. Wonder what they'll say.

if the school had to shut because of the strike will the kids get marked for being absent ?

No, they don't get marked absent. Our school was shut for lunch and the teachers were very keen to tell parents that the kids could stay home for the afternoon if they had something that they needed to do.

Everyone's lost a days pay.

I agree with colinandjess. I saw my son's TA as I was walking home this morning and she said she felt terrible about not being in work, it's not a decision that people will have made lightly.

Well the strike will have no effect, but they are a days pay down, so what was the point?

The rest of the working public have to make every effort to get to their place of work or risk losing a days pay, yet teachers can stay at home because they're snowed in but still get paid

That's their choice to lose a days pay, no-one puts a gun to their heads to force them to wave a placard and blow a whistle
