Hopefully now their situation is made more public a local age related charity may be able to gently talk them round. They seem to be very set in their ways and need help to get things resolved in the simplest way possible. So often, people don't have the time or patience to take a while and listen to someone's fears and allay them - let's hope they are put on the right...

> used to pounds shillings and pence <

i am just getting the hang of this new money

So the banks are trying to force people who are 'set in their ways' into using a style of banking they cannot get to grips with? Forced purchase of a computer which they, doubtless, will be clueless, or even phobic, about.

Would this class as 'mental cruelty'?

I can understand that the high street branches and staff are burning a hole in the banks' pockets, now most of us bank online. So why don't they club together in shared premises? Another decade or three should see out the last few hold-outs.
I agree daffy assuming they have a bank account,do they now have a facility in the PO where direct debit is possible? They didn't used to have this available?
you don't need to bank online to get cash out to pay your rent. Or to set up a DD
They just need to learn how to use a debit card.
They can pay their rent by debit card, not really complicated, but they chose not to.

I have every sympathy for their predicament but they are also refusing the help of "emergency accommodation!

I think they are just trying to make a point. I hope it doesn't end it tragedy!
If they have a bank account they are not too old to remember how to write a cheque surely.Cheques, just about, still exist as far as I know.As sqad posted earlier there probably is more to this over-hyped story than meets the eye.Nobody forced them to sleep rough. They turned down a temporary offer of emergency accomodation .
Yes I agree there probably is a lot more to this story but it is certainly achieving what it set out to do Headline grabbing.

A "decimeter"? Ive never actually seen one before I dont think.
I don't need one.I still automatically shop in L.S.D.If I buy, say, a packet of crisps in a bar and am charged 90p I take great gulps of beer and think "blimey that's 18 bob and I don't get a little bag of salt with it"

Answerbankers don't half surprise me sometimes.

'84-year-old man and his 75-year-old partner'

I can't believe the disdain on this thread. Bloody old people eh?
In fact there is more sympathy on this thread http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question1351110.html
For the teenager supposedly using benefits to feed her drug addiction...funny old world.
Not from me there is'nt!!!
How have this couple been paid up until now? If they don't have bank accounts it would probably be the post office . A card is necessary for this but you can draw as little or as much cash as you want providing the money is in the account. The article doesn't say how much the rent arrears are. They have refused emergency accommodation.I can understand them not wanting internet banking .Also when you are in the post office just look around. It isn't just the older people who draw cash but loads of the younger ones on benefits as well. So back to my first question 'how have they been paid up till now. ?'They must have been getting state pension for years .
's really hard to feel sympathy for people who have intentionally made themselves homeless
I think £1 notes are still legal tender in Scotland?
