Fao Chris Malwarebytes Grrrr!

Chris - I must have seen you recommend the free version of Malwarebytes to solve a multitude of problems a multitude of times. I never bothered until recently when I was having a problem (you may recall a thread about it) but was constantly getting update notifications so I uninstalled it. You told me after to change the scan settings. Anyway, last weekend when I was getting those not genuine windows pop-ups I installed it again and again ran a scan with no problems. NOW this time not only am I getting the constant update reminders but when I have actually clicked 'update now' I'm told my free trial has ended. What exactly is going on, is the free version only available for a short time.
I'm not impressed, it's coming out again.

You didn't read what was in front of you before clicking on a 'Next' button when installing it.

Almost the very last thing you see before completing the installation are two pre-ticked items. One of them says something like "Create a desktop icon?". The other one says something like "Take a free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium Edition?" You should have removed that tick before proceeding! (Which is something I always mention when recommending Malwarebytes Anti-Malware here on AB).

If you remove the tick you just get the free version, which is NOT time-limited. If you leave it in place you get a time-limited trial of the Premium version.

However, to the best of my knowledge, Malwarebytes continues to use the same policy that they did when the 'Premium' version was called the 'PRO' version. i.e. if you ignore the prompts to pay to keep the full version, the program defaults to become the free version anyway, which you can continue using.

If that's no longer the case, you'll need to uninstall Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and then reinstall it - but taking great care to remove the relevant tick this time round!

The titlebar of the free version includes the word Free so if yours doesn't say that then uninstall the version that is currently installed on your machine, followed by downloading and installing the Free Version Download http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (you might want to do that anyway just to be sure).

(if you don't do the uninstall first then the install probably just tries repairing the existing version, which means it will do nothing if that version is ok)

I feel sure that you installed a trial of the premium edition and Not the truly free one.

Anyway, as you have specifically addressed your question to Chris, it would be rude of me to comment any further at this stage. :-)

OK I might retry it but I have to be honest, I'm not an idiot and "Take a free trial of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium Edition?" was highly unlikely to have been selected by me, I was aware all along there was a free and premium version
I do have it as a desktop icon and it currently says:
Your databases are out of date
Your license is no longer valid Buy premium
Scan progress - not running
Realtime protection - available with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium

Yes, you've definitely installed the full program.

As Buenchico suggests uninstall it and re-install the free one.

Well here's what I see when I open the free version of Malwarebytes:

Note that, at the top of the window, the grey bar shows 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free)'. It's that word 'Free' that confirms I've got the free edition. It also appears alongside 'License'. If you've got the same thing visible then, obviously, you've also got the free version (but, from what you've written, I still strongly suspect that you haven't).

If your screen is similar to mine, 'Fix Now' and then 'Scan Now' is all that should be needed. If not, uninstall and reinstall (watching out for the tick!).

Neither am I, but I've still managed to accidentally install things (such as unwanted toolbars) in the past, simply through not spotting something something that I really should have done. We all do it!

Have you clicked on Fix now? I get that screen and I think it`s just Malwarebytes updating itself.

'Trial Expired', at the top of the screen, confirms that you accidentally installed the full version. (As I said before, we ALL do it sometimes!)

that says End Free Trial, so that's what you've got. I'd end it and install the ordinary free one.

no need, you've had a free trial, didn't like it, so cancel it and sign up for the free-all-the-time one

Now I am cross. I uninstalled it and then went via bibble's link. I most definitely selected the left hand button Not the right hand premium button. What happens at the end of the download? I get exactly the same screen as I put in my screendump.
