Will close the port unless the UK does more and helps cover the cost of illegal immigrants.

I'm sorry but isn't this a case of NMFP? He needs to get legislation changed in his own country, whereby the illegals are returned to the nearest port in Africa.

yes i agree.
ps i assume NMFP means not my flipping problem?
Perhaps the mayor of calais should try to get the money from the countries they have left. Alternatively the UK could pay them to keep them in Calais.

Spot on bednobs. Well, sounds like flipping anyway.......
Looking at the map in the BBC article, perhaps the Mayor of Marseilles should be picking up the tab, since it's his/her port they appear to be entering through ...
"The mayor complained that British immigration policy made the UK be seen as "an Eldorado" by immigrants."
Is the UK really more welcoming than the rest of Europe?
"Close the port"

Would Brussels allow France to do that?

Oh I see it is only when the UK breaks the EU rules, that all hell breaks loose.

But on second thoughts, perhaps it is the best thing that could happen, and while they are at it, the Tunnel could be filled in also.

Isn't that obvious?
They're his problem - just as those who manage to complete their journeys are our problem.
Europe at its best, and to be fair he is French.

//Is the UK really more welcoming than the rest of Europe?//

Is that a tongue in cheek comment?

The Mayor is quite correct to have a go at our immigration policy. If we were firmer then they would not want to come here, however it is the EU and the ECHR that scuppers us most of the time (the rest being by bleeding heart lefty liberals) so it is a bit rich coming from him!

What an enterprising person the Mayor of Calais is.Why did'nt we think of that all those years ago when they let illegals through the Chunnel after it opened. How much per head should we charge Calais for the expense and breakdown of our infrastructure not to mention the crime increase? Plus interest of course !!
-- answer removed --
Right, because Calais without the port has SO much going for it. the locals will love him.
I seriously doubt he has the power to do so and even if he does I think he'd find himself removed pretty quickly and the Port re-opened.
I agree 100% Chill xx
Apparently they're building a new camp and drop-in centre for them. It all costs money, don't you know? ;-)

Can't possibly have all those poor homeless ^^^ Immigrants being, well, er, homeless!
No, what about their ooman rights?

I'm surprised someone hasn't taken us to the ECHR or the EU to force the UK to let them in!!
