Am I missing something? I assume the Col is short for Colonel, so why is an Army Officer defending him?

I saw that in the report, Vulcan and it puzzled me as well. I suppose he might be a retired Army Officer ?

Vulcan ~ I pondered over that but decided that I wasn't reading the article properly and gave up. :-(

I've had another look and I can't see an explanation of why an Army Officer should be defending a civilian. But could it perhaps that an Army Counsel was appointed by the Court, as the victim was a serving Soldier...this sounds most likely. Was the offence referred to the CPS by the Army ? Dealing with soldiers in Court is quite often done under Army rules.

Still, a puzzler ! Perhaps New Judge can enlighten us here ?
