Especially because realistically we should expect that the turnout in support of the "Yes" vote will be a much larger proportion of "yes" voters than for the other side. Independence arouses more passion than status quo. I think those in favour of the Union should be very, very nervous.
We shouldn't underestimate the effect of the anti-Tory feeling north of the Border. We here in Wales have no love for the Tories but they hate them in Scotland ! If the vote goes YES, than it might be brought about by a Scottish desire to give dave a bloody nose !
I am not really aware of the legal details of this vote. Does it bind everybody ? ....I mean to say that if the vote is 51% YES and 49% NO, its hardly a ringing endorsement to break up the UK is it ?

they're talking about a great new offer of autonomy to try to stop the Yes vote

How can this be right? Hasn't postal voting already started?

Yes jno, very odd, it says it is to stop the nationalist bandwagon but then says:
The plan, in the event of a no vote, is that people from all parts of Scottish society – rather than just politicians – would be invited to take part in a Scottish conference or convention that would decide on further large-scale transfers of power from London to Holyrood.

it seems like blind panic on Whitehall (and elsewhere) to me. They've had literally centuries to come up with this offer and they still haven't got it together even after voting's begun. Just shows how you'll get nothing from government unless you make a big noise.
I've not been impressed by the frantic bullying and bribing on offer from the No camp: "We'll stop you using the pound! We'll stop you watching the BBC!"

Zacs...as a confirmed democrat I have to agree with you ( 09:06) but this isn't like a local council election, or even a General Election, where the losers have the opportunity to try to reverse the situation in, say 5 years time.
If Scot leaves the union, it is presumably for ever, or at least for another few hundred years, so the NO opposition will be very discontented, but will not have another try in the future. If that discontented opposition is left with no avenue for their views, I think it just stores up possible trouble for the future.

LJ, interesting article here backing up your reasoning. Rather unsurprisingly from the Torygraph.

I suppose the people of the rest of Europe could argue, 'why don't we have a vote as we too are affected'.

I'd expect to be able to cancel my (highly imaginary) gym membership without other members barring me from doing so, so I don't suppose there's any reason for the English to have a vote on the Scots seceding. Unless there was something to the contrary in the original membership documents, which there isn't in this case.
zacs I am not really concerned about the views of the t-graph but we are only a small island and if one part of it wants to go on a different route to the rest it is bound to have some effect on all of us. Europe is not a big concern either. I have a distinct feeling (from what I have read and heard) that this whole shebang is for the glorification of one person and others are beginning to believe the claims of the advertisement without thinking the claims through.
The aspect of all this that puzzles me is that the YES camp haven't answered a huge amount of really important questions, and yet they have all this support.
Lets leave the Poond out for a moment, as its been done to death. What about our Armed Forces after they Scots leave ? Where is the money going to come from to run the NHS ? Ditto for paying Old Age Pensions. What about existing pension arrangements for Public Service workers, like Nurses, Teachers, etc ? Will the English road repair gangs stop at Scotch Corner !
There are plenty of other examples where Salmond has been either silent or gnomic, but they haven't been resolved ! So how can some many people have made their minds up to vote YES, with so issues not addressed ?
