Air strikes are completely useless. There is next to nothing to target, and IS combatants are well dug in.

We will see a few big bangs, that will look good on the telly, but hardly any IS soldiers will be killed.

A feeble response from a scared President and a completely clueless Prime Minister.

We appear to be between Scylla and Charybdis (which was always going to happen sometime). On the one hand I understand fully that Isil (and other extreme groups such as Al Quaeda) actively want us to intervene to give them moral cause for a jihad against the West. This course of action could also result in activating extreme reactions amongst the Muslim population in the UK. I would hope that the Muslim council - whose statements I have welcomed - would work actively to discourage this.

On the other hand, if we now do nothing, we are seen as a soft target. I may be shot down in flames here (one reason that I do not post a lot) but I suggest that the poem 'First they came for the Jews' may focus minds. Not doing anything will also encourage home-grown hotheads.

There was an earlier thread which mentioned about how someone would feel if they were the one in the 'boots on the ground'. Well, OH was an evacuee in the 2nd WW; saw bombs falling on Swansea dockyard; returned and hid in a cupboard with his mum during bombing raids on London; played in the ruins and found schrapnel to swap at school and stood stock-still in the street when the engine noise of a V2 ceased. Later, he did 2 years N.S., marching his platoon up and down in front of the wall of barbed wire which formed the iron curtain - he had a Lee-Enfield rifle and 6 rounds of ammunition (as did the rest of the platoon) - the guys in the watchtowers followed their progress with automatic Kalashnikovs!

I just gave that background to explain that he has always been in favour of 'jaw, jaw' - but now feels that we have absolutely no choice than to move to action. I agree, very sadly.

So, we bomb another country because a Brit has been beheaded by another Brit. Surely even Cameron can see he's being set up for a fall. Hasn't he learnt anything from Blair's warmongering excursions, and how many lives that cost with little to show for it.

By your logic, we should have carried out military air strikes against Ireland during the 70s (and following) because of all the innocent Brits killed by IRA bombs.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but it certainly ISN'T to walk blindly into the trap set by the terrorists - that's JUST WHAT THEY WANT. It gives them loads of anti-Brit propaganda with pictures of innocent children etc killed by our bombs. IMO, we must AVOID that trap at all costs.

The statement " We will hunt them down" is a bit ott, DC could not find an erection in his Y fronts, I think he means, we will send in our forces to get killed in some Godforsaken cess pit so that I look good on the world stage.

sounds like the War of Jenkins' Ear, supposedly sparked off because the Spanish had cut off the ear of a British seaman; it dragged on for nine years and nobody really won. I'd hoped Britain wouldn't allow itself to be provoked into war quite so easily again. At least the earlier war was sort of winnable; this isn't.

Baza/Canary...perhaps if we continued to ask them nicely, to stop murdering thousands of people, they will eventually get the hint and be nice cuddly people again ? I use the example of the former Yugoslavia...where would we be now if we hadn't acted decisively in the early 90's ? Tyrants and dictators need to be dealt with and all the hand-wringing in the world is not going to stop these murderous barbarians.
