Apparently the local don't want this Sikh school in their nice white, middle class village, on "environmental grounds"...yeah, well if you believe that you can believe anything. I'm sure if Eton or Chaterhouse wanted to open an annex in Stoke Poges, these locals would roll out the red carpet.
But Mr Pickles, the Tory Communities Secretary has overruled the decision and now some of the locals are threatening to vote UKIP !

at the 2011 census, 430,000 people were listed as Sikhs, which is less than 1% of the total UK population. but in southall, the Sikh population represents 23% of the whole. whilst nowhere near a majority, it does represent the largest group outside south asia. slough isn't far behind though.

Just making a point after the rambling rant on the first page by BAZWILLRUN, "how long until stoke poges resmbles calcutta etc, once this school gets the go ahead...thats just the start, and in no time theyll take over the whole area just like everywhere else these people go and then whats left of the people of stoke poges can be happy feeling like foreigners in their own village."
Mikey, I am referring to your obsession with the word 'racism'. The more that word is used the more division it causes. As I see it from the second link that was offered, pupils were being allocated places at a school where cultural practices were being instilled, eg. No meat products allowed, even in non Sikh children's lunch boxes, also these children being marginalized in other ways. In an earlier post I suggested that all schools should be secular and leave religion out of it. Once you use the R word you bring out Labours much beloved Diversity Police, creating positive discrimination and marginalising the indigenous population. Ok, the mention of Asylum seekers wasn't appropriate, but I hope you get my meaning (although I doubt it)
You are correct that the issue of asylum seekers is not germane to this post.
This school is already there. Whether it operates a vegetarian regime or not has nothing to do with the planning consent issue whatsoever. Pickles has seen through the local opposition for what it really is...the racial background of the majority of pupils that are, and will attend. I repeat that if this was a school that did not have an admissions policy that ended up with a mostly non-white intake, the objections would not have occurred. If a posh Public School were to open up in Stoke Poges, the locals would be running out the red carpet, in joy that their house prices would rocket as a result.
You accuse me of bringing up the race card inappropriately here on AB. But the facts of this case show that its the colour of the pupils skin that is the real problem for the locals, not whether they can take ham sandwiches to school or not. If you really cannot see that, then perhaps you need to redefine what racism and nimbyism is all about. Some people on here can see that and I fail to see why it is not obvious to everybody. I repeat that the Tory Minister, Mr Pickles seems to have no problem in seeing the wood for the trees.

Having now read the Telegraph report, I can see that the story has two issues. It appears that people in Stoke Poges are angry both at the presence of the school and they are not happy that 12 kids were placed there, despite it not being named as one of their preferred schools.
The school services the large Sikh community in nearby Slough, so I'm not sure what possible answer there is to that.
On the second point - as an athiest, I wouldnt want my child going to an religious academy (of whatever denomination), and I would suggest that the local education authority find a way to accommodate the wishes of these affected parents.
If the locals want to vote UKIP over this, then they're free to do so.

Linda...you know nothing of my newspaper-reading habits whatsoever.
I haven't "just started" to read the Sunday Times. I have been reading it since I was a teenager, which is a lot longer than 40 years. Don't rely on snide and relevant remarks made by other people...if you want to know, ask me directly.
For your information, I read the Guardian 6 days a week and the Observer on Sundays. In addition I read the Sunday Times most weekends and the i paper on a Saturday. I sometimes also get the Saturday Telegraph and the Saturday Times, as I like to enter the prize crosswords. Occasionally I buy Private Eye, and my fall-back position when I can't get the Guardian is the Independent. I never buy the Daily Mail, Express, Sun, Daily Mirror, or Star. You now have my full newspaper habits and so perhaps you can now "believe"
Nowhere have I ever shown an "intensely dislike of white middle/upper middle class communities" Whether I am "middle/upper class" or not is for somebody else to label me, and personally I couldn't give a toss either way. But I am undoubtedly white. My intense dislike on this thread is about racism and I make it my job to combat it whenever I come across it. I still maintain, despite the red herrings of atheism and vegetarianism, that racism is at the core of this affair.
You have still not addressed the issue of how different this case would be if a School was operating in Stoke Poges that didn't have a predominantly non-white intake.

Mikey, you have labeled me in the past for reading the Daily Mail. You also told me I knew nothing about politics. I read non fiction, mostly political biographies, some of my favorites were by Alan Johnson, Chris Mullin and Andrew Rawnsley. Not are re known for there right wing views. You seem to overwhelm this News Forum. I think I might go back just using the Crosswords. I only responded to this because of the title you gave it, 'Naked Racism'
